Highlights: Wood Thrush, Veery, Hermit Thrush.

Notes: Our totals today were very similar to yesterday, but we had our first major influx of thrushes last night. After all was said and done, we encountered all of the brown-backed thrushes, including our first Wood and Hermit Thrushes of the fall season.

Weather: Temps in the mid 60’s to start, rising to the mid 70’s by close. We had very light northwest winds and clear skies

* American Redstart males have delayed plumage maturation; it takes a full year before males acquire the characteristic Halloween colors we know and love. In fall, the only males that show complete black and orange plumage are at least one year old. In this plumage, we can’t know if this bird hatched out last year (2017) or prior to that, but we do know that he didn’t hatch this year. As such, we use “after hatching year” or “AHY” to describe his age.

Thank you to all of our awesome volunteers who came out last weekend to help with our annual Earth Day litter pick up. CONNECTING YOUNG PEOPLE WITH THE JOYFULNESS OF BIRDS AND THE NATURAL WORLD IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER. YOU CAN HELP MAKE THAT HAPPEN!

At Black Swamp Bird Observatory, we are committed to connecting young people to the joyfulness of birds and the value of habitat conservation. Our strong focus on youth education is highlighted by our Wetland Investigation Network (WIN) program, which offers students grades K-12 a day-long exploration of the entire marsh ecosystem. Our highly acclaimed Ohio Young Birders Club for ages 12-18 encourages, educates, and empowers our youth conservation leaders. The OYBC also serves as a model program for many other state-wide youth birding clubs.

Each year in May, Tom Bartlett conducts a BIG SIT fundraiser to support BSBO’s education programs. This is the 24th annual BIG SIT, and Tom has raised more than $100,000 for BSBO through this incredible effort! Tom spends 12 hours counting all the bird species he sees or hears from a 15 foot circle. Your BIG SIT donation, or pledge per bird, provides much-needed support that allows BSBO to offer our dynamic education programs at NO COST to schools.

This year, Tom will conduct his Big Sit on International Migratory Bird Day, Saturday, May 12, from 5 AM - 5 PM near the west end of the boardwalk at Magee Marsh Wildlife Area.
