Members who participated in the co-op had a very busy summer preparing and training their animals for the fair. This year, five students proudly exhibited a total of 11 animals. They had a wonderful week at the fair and earned many impressive placings. We are incredibly proud of their hard work, dedication, and accomplishments throughout the season.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ Three Star Chapter ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Last week, our FFA chapter was named as a three star chapter in the National FFA’s National Chapter Award Program!

The national chapter award program recognizes chapters for having a complete program of activities which includes planning and implementing activities throughout the year in 15 different areas such as leadership, citizenship, and agricultal literacy. Our chapter was able to apply for this recognition at the national level after receiving a gold award at the state level in the spring. Chapters are recognized with one, two, or three stars based on the quality of their application. We are the only chapter in the state to receive three stars!

Our chapter will be recognized on stage at the National FFA Convention in October.

Today was another busy day in Agriscience!

This morning, Veronica Eagle and Kadence Plake presented about our FFA chapter’s successes this year to the NC RESA school board.

Then, we released the salmon we’ve been raising since November into the Muskegon River. This project is through a partnership with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources called the ‘Salmon in the Classroom’ program.

Finally, we were able to tour the Michigan Agricultural Commodities facility in Newaygo to learn about their role in the agriculture industry, career opportunities, and see how the facility runs!

To cap off our marathon week of activities, today we co-hosted our 6th annual Region V Livestock Judging contest! We had over 100 students from 8 different schools across West Michigan. This event is at the held at the Newaygo County Fairgrounds and hosted by our chapter with the Fremont FFA. In the end we took home a 3rd place team award for the team of Violet Rybski (Grant), Gidian Gillette (Grant), Veronica Abad-Dominguez (Tri-County), and Veronica Eagle (White Cloud). We also had 2 students finish in the top 5! Veronica Abad-Dominguez took the high point individual award and Ava Baker (Fremont) took 4th place individual! Congratulations to everyone who competed and thank you to the MSU IAT programs for coming and talking with students about opportunities for them close to home!

We’ve had a marathon of activities this week and today was no exception! AM agriscience students traveled to Hesperia Elementary while PM traveled to Grant Elementary to wrap up our Mother’s Day Project activity. Our students helped the elementary students plant flowers in the pots they painted last week. We got to enjoy a little Simon Says and Duck, Duck, Goose with the first graders this morning, too!

Our meat judging team spent the day “chilling” in the MSU meat lab while competing in the Michigan FFA Meat Judging Contest! Elizabeth Crisler, Kadence Plake, and Veronica Eagle evaluated beef and pork carcasses, primal cuts, and retail cuts, identified cuts of beef, pork, and lamb, and tested their knowledge of food safety and meat science on a written test. Results will be announced later this week!

Today, seven members, representing three teams, attended the Michigan FFA Meat Rabbit Contest! In January, we bred our breeding trios, and kits were born in February. Since then, students have been caring for the rabbits. The meat rabbit competition allows students to learn how to keep records using an online record keeping system, create pedigrees for rabbits, and how to raise a market animal. The students received great feedback today, and we’ll have results later this week! While processing day isn’t always the students’ favorite part, it gives them an opportunity to see an important aspect of a safe food supply.
