The Golden State Academy is comprised of award winning coaches from across the Bay Area. All of our staff are also former competitors of the James Logan High School Speech and Debate program that was featured on both The Oprah Winfrey Show and the PBS documentary Accidental Hero: Room 408. Here is one of the coolest things about this activity. 🤔 Sometimes you get assigned a side you do not agree with, you dig into the research, and somewhere along the way you realize you were the one who needed convincing. Suddenly the issue looks completely different than it did before you started. That is not losing an argument. That is growing. It means you actually engaged with the evidence instead of just defending what you already believed. So we want to hear it.

Huge congratulations to Arushi Telukuntla and Abraham Lee! 🏆 This dynamic duo took 7th place in Public Forum Debate at the NSDA Middle School National Championship in Richmond, Virginia. Let that sink in. Out of competitors from all across the country, our students finished among the very best in the nation.

That does not happen by accident. It is the result of countless hours of research, drilling, refining arguments, and showing up round after round with heart and focus. We are so proud of both of you and everything you poured into this run. You represented GSA with class and grit, and you made this whole community proud. This is a moment you will remember for a long time, and it is only the beginning. Way to go, Arushi and Abraham. 🧡

Let's be real for a second. 💭 Every competitor has that one round. The one that did not go your way, the ballot you read three times hoping it would say something different, the drive home that felt way too quiet. And somehow those rounds end up teaching you more than the wins ever did.

Ten seconds at the top of your speech can change how the entire round feels. 🗺️ Before you dive in, tell the judge exactly where you are taking them. Something as simple as "I will start with my opponent's disadvantages, then move to my own case" gives them a frame to organize everything you are about to say.

Here is why it works. Judges are building their flow as you speak, and if they know what is coming, they can set up the page before you get there. Nothing gets lost. Nothing gets misplaced. Your structure becomes obvious instead of something they have to reconstruct on the fly. It also does something for you.

Saying your roadmap out loud forces you to commit to an order, which keeps you from wandering mid speech. Then stick to it. A roadmap you abandon halfway through is worse than none at all. Say where you are going, go there, and let the judge follow along easily. 🧭

What a year. 🏆 Look at these four standing shoulder to shoulder with hardware in hand, and know that this photo represents so much more than a single moment. It is the payoff for a full season of early mornings, late night drafts, rounds won, rounds lost, and the kind of relentless work that does not always make it onto a stage. We are so proud of this crew and everything they poured into this year. Every practice, every rewrite, every tough ballot they turned into fuel. This is what dedication looks like, and this is what it earns. Huge congratulations to our team on a season none of us will forget. The bar just got higher, and we could not be more excited for what comes next. Onward, GSA. 🧡

Time to pick a side. ⚖️ This week's SPAR debate is the one that has divided competitors since the beginning of time. Speech or Debate?

Team Speech says nothing beats owning a room with a piece you built from the ground up, where the delivery is everything and the audience feels every word. Team Debate says the real thrill is thinking on your feet, tearing down an argument in real time, and winning a round you had no business winning. Both take guts. Both take hours of work. Only one can win this thread.

Want to make a judge's job easier and win their trust in the process? Signpost everything. 🧭 Judges are listening, flowing, and taking notes all at once, and if they lose track of where you are, they might miss your best point entirely.

That is where clear transitions save you. Simple phrases like "my first contention is," or "now moving to my opponent's second argument," act like road signs that guide the judge through your speech. They always know exactly where you are and what you are doing. It sounds almost too simple, but the difference is huge. A speech without signposting feels like one long blur.

A speech with it feels organized, confident, and easy to score in your favor. Do not make the judge work to follow you. Hand them the map and walk them through it. Your ballots will thank you. ✍️
