Mission: To educate on the importance of biodiversity, to promote sustainability, and to encourage conservation, preservation, and restoration of ecosystems. Wilson Biophilia Center in 2009. The Center is named after and dedicated to world renowned scientist Dr. Edward O. Wilson, who has made his life-long mission to educate the public about the importance of co

nserving the world's biodiversity. Dr. Wilson developed the term "biophilia" which literally means "the love of all living things". Students who visit the E.O. Wilson Biophilia Center learn about the natural environment through interpretive exhibits as well as an extensive trail system through natural areas on Nokuse Plantation. The Center offers a two or four day program, with curriculum that coincides with Florida's education standards. While promoting Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathmatics (STEM) subjects, students are provided opportunities for inquiry, investigation and innovation by gaining a better understanding and knowledge of their surroundings. The Walton County School District considers our facility to be an extension of their classroom as we are their science education project-based learning facility, the place where schooling becomes applicable. Wilson Biophilia Center educates 5,200 students in a 5 county area and averages more than 100 students every school day. In addition, we are open to the general public on select days, providing a variety of environmental presentations.

⚡Well that was close 👀

We caught this moment on our boardwalk today. Moments like these are a powerful reminder of just how wild and untamed this landscape really is, even right outside our doors.

The longleaf pine ecosystem here at Nokuse Plantation has weathered storms like this for generations, in fact, fire and storm disturbance are a natural, essential part of how this habitat regenerates and thrives. Nature doesn't just survive weather like this, it depends on it.

📸 Caught on camera: our backyard birdwatchers!

Our FeatherSnap camera has been busy capturing some familiar faces around the Center. First up, a curious Carolina Wren, easy to spot by that bold white eyebrow stripe and perky, upturned tail. Right behind, a Mourning Dove struck a pose, recognizable by its soft tan feathers, dark wing spots, and those bright reddish-pink feet.

Both species are common year-round residents right here in the Florida Panhandle, and it's always a treat to catch these everyday visitors going about their business on camera. Nature doesn't need an invitation to show up and steal the spotlight! 🐦

🌙 Creature Feature is back with an unforgettable film screening!

Join us on Friday, September 26th at 5PM for a screening of The Forgotten Coast: Return to Wild Florida, presented by the Florida Wildlife Corridor Foundation at the E.O. Wilson Biophilia Center.

This powerful documentary follows a small team on a rugged 1,000-mile journey by foot, paddle, and bike across the Florida Panhandle, tracing the path of a wandering Florida black bear through some of the state's wildest and least-seen landscapes. Along the way, they encounter black bears, manatees, alligators, ancient river fish, and endangered woodpeckers, all living within a fragile wildlife corridor stretching from the Everglades to the Florida-Alabama border. It's a rare, breathtaking look at the wild Florida many people never get to see.
