Highland Community College Servant Leadership

Highland Community College Servant Leadership In 1997 each high school in the region is invited to participate and nominate 2 juniors to represent their school.

The College received a one-year grant from the Kellogg Foundation in the amount of $25,250.00 to begin the High School Servant-Leadership Institute, to train high school juniors on the servant-leadership concept with an emphasis on community volunteerism. To date, more than 200 high school students have participated from all 17 high schools in the College district. In 2003, the program received th

A meaningful day at Canyon Camp for our Servant Leadership Senior Retreat!

Through COPE challenges, our seniors reflected on their “why,” strengthened their leadership skills, and challenged themselves and one another to grow.

As they begin a year filled with “lasts,” we encouraged them to set the tone—to lead with purpose, serve others, and make each moment count. We are excited to see the impact they will make throughout their senior year!

Dan here!

Seeing our High School Servant Leaders in action has been one of the most meaningful moments I've experienced in this program. I've seen amazing actions from our young people in the last 48 hours. From LW School buses rolling through town driven by their superintendent to servant leaders out and about serving others to a past mentor helping her family and a current mentor dropping family places to help others.

The story that risew above all: On Friday I was trying to get to my family and see our home. Navigating Lena was hard. I had my 4 year old with me and was not in work clothes... I saw Aiden desperately working to put what I thought was his home back together before the second storm hit. Instinctually I honked to show him support and felt ridiculous for doing so and then driving away. Today Ev and Mal gave me his phone number after I asked for it to see if I could do anything for him. The home he was by had lost its roof. He shared he was good and that it actually wasn't his house... It was Mal's.

This is not just servant leadership in action. This is a group of high schoolers caring for each other, caring for their community. It's one of the many anecdotes that were lived through.

Thank you to the many folks checking in on those they care for- I've received many of emails that I have not yet been able to respond to. You all make a difference. Thank you for putting your servant-first leadership into action.

The adult leadership programs from Highland have shown their support in tremendous ways. Thankful to be a part of these tremendous programs that put our values into practice. Thank you!!

This month's training is going to be one of the best yet...and we've had some great trainings this year! Dwayne Fontenette (far left) returns and he's bringing back Preston Marquis (second from left) for what will be his second training. Dwayne has been with us for nearly a decade and Preston's returning for his second training. These two are brilliant individuals who are taking on the challenge of discussing 'negotiation.' More on this Saturday!

Be sure your service hours are reviewed by your mentors, portfolios are good to go and viewable, and any other final needs for semester are completed so you can be assessed for your work this semester in this program.

The meeting begins promptly at 9a. Breakfast this month is provided by Winnebago /West Carroll.
