Year 2 of the Golden Hearts Trips is officially in the books!

For the second year, seniors from a local senior housing community have had the opportunity to take monthly, free trips to The Salvation Army of Winnebago County food pantry. This partnership between Illinois Extension and the Salvation Army helps make it easier for seniors to access nutritious food and provides a reliable way to get to the pantry each month.

Before filling their carts, seniors enjoy a free lunch, play games, and share plenty of laughs. These trips have been a great way to spend time together and help seniors feel connected to their community.

Food and Health Systems Educator Tashara Grandys always has a blast facilitating the trip with the seniors, and can't wait to start it back up next year!

Thank you to everyone who joined us for Taking the Next Steps in Cover Crop Management!

Participants spent the morning exploring advanced cover crop strategies, including selecting and mixing cover crop species, drone seeding applications, evaluating economic returns, and management practices for successful implementation.

Special thanks to presenters Nathan Johanning, Illinois Extension Commercial Agriculture Specialist, Zach Lieb, Agri Soar Solutions, LLC, and Kathryn Seebruck, Illinois Extension Commercial Agriculture Educator, for sharing their expertise, and to our farmer panelists for providing valuable real-world perspectives and experiences.

We appreciate everyone who attended and contributed to the discussion. Together, we're helping build healthier soils and stronger farming systems through informed cover crop management.
