Congratulations to Monmouth County Vocational FFA Chapter who placed 3rd at The Philadelphia Flower Show and received a Class Commendation Award! Class Commendations are awarded to the class when all entries in their category are at such a high standard.

The students' exhibit was called The Gardean Angel. The students transformed a harsh hell strip located along a busy street into a strip of heaven using uprooted plants.

Both Ms. Guttadora and Ms. Wetzel said it was an honor for their students to be a part of this stellar exhibit in the public garden category. This was a team effort by everyone at the Career Center and without their support, this could not have taken place. The Floral Class can’t thank you all enough for your efforts and support with their exhibit!

A very special thank you to the building trades class who secured and created the dress form for our growing angel. Mr. Eldridge & Mr. Alvino also came in early and prepared the angel for her trip to Philly. Mr. Martin - we cannot thank you enough for your brainstorming, braun, and calming presence throughout!

A huge shout out to Barlow's, who was the source for these magnificent Trachelospermum Jasminoides and our stunning bird obelisks! Steven Barlow of Barlow Flower Farm is an advisory board member and a great resource for the program.

See the exhibit at The Philadelphia Flower Show until June 13th.
John Humphrey is a 2008 alum of Monmouth County Vocational FFA Chapter. As an FFA member, John's activities included participating in the Turf Management Career Development Event. FFA makes a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth, and career success.

Click the link below to watch session 3 of the RU Ready to Garden series. Session 3's instructor was Bill Errickson, the Agriculture and Natural Resources Extension Agent in Monmouth County with a focus on nursery, turfgrass, and agricultural innovation.

Bill's presentation was on edible landscaping. Edible landscaping involves growing food-producing plants in the residential landscape. Edible landscapes incorporate fruit and nut trees, berry bushes, vegetables, herbs, and edible flowers in a way that is both productive and aesthetically interesting. Edible species can be included in any style of gardening and can be combined with ornamental specimens to achieve your landscaping goals. This webinar will focus on the basic concepts of edible landscaping and will discuss plant species for creating your edible landscape.

What a day we had at The Philadelphia Flower Show. Our students enjoyed the exhibits and enjoyed seeing their own exhibit be enjoyed by so many. We even met famous floral designer Tu Bloom and joined in his potting party. It was pretty cool to be making container gardens with the floral designer of the Grammys! This is what it’s all about 🌟

Our Philly Flower Show exhibit “Garden State of Mind” is In Full Bloom until June 19th. Students from the Monmouth County Career Center helped to create the entire exhibit! Our building trades class built the pergola, building services built the table, our floral students grew the plants, designed, created and brought our idea to life! Our entire school was involved in one way or another and we couldn’t have done it without a full team effort! Come check out a little piece of the garden state blooming in Philly!

Our floriculture training students have been learning about the Japanese art of Kokedama. The word ‘Kokedama’ translates to “moss ball” and is an ancient gardening tradition that can incorporate a wide variety of houseplants. The distinctive round shape of Kokedama is formed by covering the roots of the chosen plant with moss. Kokedama can be displayed sitting on a decorative saucer or hanging from the ceiling.
