Free Union Country School Free Union Country School--preschool through 5th--seeks to inspire in each child a love of learning and an eagerness to come to school every day.

Free Union Country School provides a strong and supportive academic and social environment for children from preschool age through fifth grade. With the cooperation of parents, students, teachers, staff, and friends, Free Union Country School is a community where learning is valued, individuals are respected, diversity is understood as a strength, and teamwork is rewarded. The school's program develops independence, responsibility, self-confident decision-making, and each child's natural desire to learn. Free Union Country School admits children between the ages of three and eleven who can benefit from a child-centered, multi-disciplinary academic school curriculum, offered without discrimination by race, religion, ethnic background, gender, or sexual orientation.

A rainy day at Foxfield Races didn’t slow down the stick ponies! We were so glad to be a part of the races and children’s activities again this year. Our ponies worked hard and brought lots of smiles.

Maybe we’re biased, but we think this is the best school playground around!

For years, our students have thrived in our open spaces, wooded treehouses, swings, basketball court, and climbing structures like the “Beehive” and Climbing wall. Last year, we added a few spinners that were a huge hit. But now, we’ve taken it up yet another notch!

Thanks to generous donations from our Spring Silent Auction, the ninja playground is the perfect fit for Free Union kids. This alternative to a traditional playground has so many developmental benefits, like improved coordination and balance, problem-solving, and confidence-building.

4/5 helped honor the new structure recently with an official “ribbon cutting ceremony,” but kids have been loving this new option since day 1 of the school year. By climbing, balancing, and swinging through obstacles, elementary kids have one more way to build strength and resilience.

Our weeks at Free Union are full of discovery, adventuring, study, and collaboration. Lately that’s looked like observing caterpillars as they transform into chrysalises and then butterflies, drawing self-portraits, and writing classroom agreements with statements like “we agree to ask questions and listen to everyone’s ideas” to “we agree to do hard things.”

2/3 has gone on 2 walking field trips in their social studies unit, including one to abandoned spaces near our school. They looked for evidence of how these places may have been used in the past and noticed what nature does over time. The poetry, sketches, and questions that came from the outing were incredible and only begin to scratch the surface of what’s ahead.

We dedicated our new playground structure and learned new music, got paired with buddies, experienced our first pizza day run by the 5th graders, and so much more.

Safe to say we’re off to a great school year with enthusiasm and a love of learning.

From watching monarch caterpillars grow and form their chrysalises, to mornings full of art (yarn letters, watercolor portraits, paper airplanes, clay self-portraits), to building a playhouse in Tangents, and no shortage of playground time, we are constantly active learners!

We are always so excited to participate with Foxfield Races for this fun, family-friendly activity that brings extra joy to the day. Stick ponies are handmade by students each year in a group effort, including during our Makers classes and after-school pizza party workshop.

The result is a fun stick pony made from recycled materials that kids at Foxfield get to race for a special event and bring home with them at the end. Come by our booth on race day to say hello and grab your stick pony!

There are endless questions, curiosities, and discoveries to be made outside the walls of a classroom. That’s why even though we LOVE our new science classroom, we also really believe in the power of stepping outside those four walls and the opportunity that exists all around us.

The garden is a beautiful example of how students apply their knowledge, research plants and habitats, learn to understand things like ecological conditions and the growing patterns in nature, and so much more. Students build, plant, care for, and harvest as part of their year-long study. In classic Free Union form, we also integrate art an other subjects throughout the garden to make it a true extension of our home.

Imagine a world where we teach kids that learning happens everywhere ☀️🌻
