Congratulations to CGS Class of 2024 senior, Ashley Hayden, for her acceptance into the University of Virginia as a Walentas Scholar through the Jefferson Foundation! Ashley attends the CGS King George site, and she will be studying biomedical engineering at UVA.
Jefferson and Walentas Scholarships are awarded to individuals who have undergone a rigorous selection process and who possess an exceptional record of and the potential for impact both inside and outside the classroom. The selection process has three main components: Nomination (300 students), Regional Review (45 students), and Final Selection (12-15 awarded). The scholarship covers the full cost of attendance at UVA for four years. It is considered one of the world's most prestigious awards, covers tuition and room and board, and also provides money for summer travel, independent research, and study abroad opportunities.
Additionally, Ashley was selected as a Rodman Scholar. Based on the academic achievement, intellectual curiosity, and level of motivation demonstrated in her application, she was selected to be a Rodman Scholar in the School of Engineering and Applied Science and will receive a $5,000 scholarship toward her first year of attendance.
The Rodman Scholars Program at the UVA School of Engineering & Applied Science is a small (only 5% of each incoming class), diverse community of learners passionate about using engineering to create a sustainable, equitable future with a genuinely better quality of life for all. In the end, students are prepared to harness the power of data and algorithms, design aerospace vehicles of the future, create engineered tissue, start your own company, be a consultant, or opt to deepen your knowledge through graduate study. Current Scholars are hired by the top firms in their fields, start their own ventures, and go on to the most prestigious graduate programs in science and engineering.
Congratulations, Ashley! We are so proud of you and all of your accomplishments!

Check out our seniors from AP Statistics at the Stafford Site!
Bean Boozled is a game produced by the Jelly Belly Company. The game consists of a spinner and various flavors of jelly beans. Some are delicious flavors and others are purposely disgusting! For every good jelly bean flavor there is a bad jelly bean that looks exactly the same. The Jelly Belly company claims that there is a 50/50 chance of getting a bad-flavored jelly bean. The students were doing a one-sample proportions hypothesis test to see if the jelly bean company's claim is true. This activity was putting into practice our Unit 6 AP Statistics curriculum for setting up a hypothesis test for a population proportion, interpreting a p-value, and drawing a conclusion for the test.
Most groups found evidence not supporting the company's claim! The students had a blast applying the math concepts they've learned in a real-world, relevant application.

Congratulations to Nathaniel Salsberry, a CGS sophomore at the Spotsylvania Site from Massaponax HS, for being part of the team of winners of the Best Overall Category at HackBI on January 27-28, 2024 at Bishop Ireton High School. His teammates were all students from St. Paul VI Catholic HS. Nathaniel is pictured below in the black jacket with glasses, 2nd from the right.
HackBI is a 24-hour hackathon by students, for students, to learn things, collaborate with others, and make ideas come to life. Hackathons are fun events in which teams and individuals create their own custom programming projects to showcase and potentially win prizes.
Their team created "Circuit Breakers," a game that answered the question: What would happen if you were stranded in a dystopian future with menacing androids on your tail? In this game, you have to defeat evil androids and stay alive as long as possible. To see their game, click here: https://devpost.com/software/circuit-breakers
