Amazing that the thing we keep asking for is proven to work.

We already knew this, and now we can work to convince the people delivering these supports that they actually work IF THE STUDENTS ARE GIVEN APPROPRIATE IEPS.

A major study finds special education helps students. But is it enough? The findings are strikingly positive: Students made large, sustained gains after getting services. The harder question is whether special education could work even better.

Spending some time watching the Virginia Department of Education's livestream and this slide jumped out at me. 19% of Virginia schools need additional support for students with disabilities. That jibes with what I see. I see caseloads too high, students not found eligible because schools don't have support staff, and resistance to providing supports due to cost. This is not how it's supposed to work. Hopefully, this initiative will help students get what they need so they don't need as many services going into middle school.

I ran my last drum circle of the year tonight. It rocked. Thanks to all my students, their parents, and my support from STEP VA, Inc. in lending event this year. Let’s drum together in 2025!
