Summer Drummer Camp 2026: Wrap Up

We finished our camp on Friday with our Sharing Ceremony. It was fantastic! The campers nailed their parts and left smiling.

I want to thank the parents who send their kids to camp every year. Their smiles are the reason I started this camp, and I’m never disappointed in the results.

Next, I want to thank Brittany Harrell for her generous donation of our camp shirts, and Mike WL for his generous donation of our shirt design. You are both excellent people.

Finally, I want to thank and recognize the folks who helped make the camp so successful. First, Callie at Fredericksburg Parks and Rec for working with us. We love that space! I also want to thank my workers and volunteers, including Sandy, Sarah, Jax, Jade, Abby, and Britt. We could not have had this much fun without your spirit and your energy.

Summer Drummer Camp 2026: Day 4

Yesterday’s camp was an exercise in “everything that can go wrong will go wrong.” The battery died in our PA speaker so we had to scramble! We managed to rework the schedule and were diligently working when my lovely wife Kelly showed up with the cord. Then we got back on track by the end of the day. We are primed and ready for our Sharing Ceremony!

Summer Drummer Camp 2026: Day 3

We did a lot of drumming and dancing today! We worked on our songs and assigned vocal parts. Then we did some ensemble work and dialed that in more. Our movement game was another African movement game called Adzee Adzo, and then we did some singing and conducting! Then we had some jump time, which is what we drum facilitators call it when we get to actively facilitate a drum circle. We ended, as usual, with our solos. It was a great day and we are almost ready for our sharing ceremony on Friday!

Summer Drummer Camp 2026: Day 1

Camp started out yesterday with a boom, which is appropriate because we were drumming. We played some rumble ball, worked on ensemble 4 from the World Music Drumming curriculum, and had a really good time making music together. Today will be even better!

I had occasion to call the Virginia Department of Education this morning, and they shared some information I think is helpful. If you are interested in a facilitated IEP, there is a form for that. However, you can also request facilitation for any IDEA related meeting and VDOE can support that request. Below is the link to the VDOE website that has more information and the form to request a facilitator. Hope this helps!
