Your dog's equipment has one job: keeping them safe while you're out in the world together. That's why I recommend a harness for most dogs. It protects the neck, and it can't cause pain or restrict breathing when big feelings show up.

🧠 But here's the thing. Equipment holds the body. It was never meant to hold the brain.

The real question on every walk isn't "what is my dog wearing?" It's "do I have my dog's brain, or does the environment?" That's what we work toward, one fun rep at a time.

One of my favorite things to watch isn't just the dogs learning...it's people learning to see.☺️

A few weeks into class or a private behavior plan, something starts to change.

Instead of looking for big breakthroughs, they begin noticing the tiny wins.
"I caught him looking back at me."
"She recovered so much faster."
"He paused before barking."
"She chose to sniff instead."
"They settled five minutes sooner today."🐾

These moments might seem small to someone else.

To us?
⭐️They're everything.⭐️

Because every tiny success tells us a skill is growing.

🦅 Soon, my students develop what I jokingly call eagle eyes.
They're scanning each day for those little moments worth celebrating.
Not because we're ignoring the hard parts.
But because those tiny wins become the motivation to keep practicing tomorrow.

Success Builds Fast Learners.

Imagine learning to ride a bicycle.

If someone started you at the top of a steep hill, you probably wouldn't feel confident. You'd feel overwhelmed.

Now imagine starting on a quiet, flat driveway.
You wobble a little.
You balance.
You pedal a few feet.

⭐️ Success. ⭐️

That success makes you willing to try again.
Dogs learn the same way.🐾

When we create environments where they're able to make good choices, something wonderful happens.

They don't just learn the behavior.
They become learners.
Confidence grows.
Curiosity grows.
Resilience grows.

This is why I spend so much time adjusting the environment instead of expecting dogs to simply "try harder."

I want dogs practicing success—not frustration.
Because success doesn't make learning easier...
Success is what creates learners.

Every morning after his nap, Otter needs to go outside for a bathroom trip.
Simple, right?

🚪 Except I have two doors. And this week I realized each one is running a completely different training session, whether I planned one or not.

🐿️ In the backyard, the squirrels get five stars.
🐇 Rabbit scent gets four.
🙉 Coming back to me on the deck? Let's just say the reviews are not glowing.

So what does Otter practice out there? Stalking, chasing, and tuning me out.
Not because he's being difficult. Because that environment hands him five star reasons to rehearse exactly those things.

The front yard tells a different story. On a long line, with me, with games and food, everything shifts.

🎯 Suddenly connection is the most valuable thing out there. And that's what he practices instead.

Every trip outside, our dogs are getting really good at something. The environment we choose decides what.

The Environment is the Curriculum.

One of the biggest mindset shifts in dog training is realizing that behavior doesn't happen in a vacuum.

Every environment has its own lesson plan.

A puppy working in a small pen is learning something very different than a dog exploring a quiet riverbank.

A busy park asks different questions than your living room.

The environment changes:
👃 the smells
👀 the sights
🏃 the movement
📏 the distance from distractions
🔊 the sounds

When your dog struggles, it doesn't mean they forgot their training.
It means the environment is revealing their current skill level for that picture.

As trainers, our job isn't to throw dogs into harder situations and hope they figure it out.

Our job is to become thoughtful teachers.

We choose environments where our dogs can practice, succeed, and gradually build the skills they'll need for more challenging places.

The environment isn't the obstacle. The environment is the curriculum.

3×3 Magic ✨

One of the biggest myths in dog training is that you need long training sessions.
You don't.
Instead, try 3 minutes, 3 times a day.

Those three minutes might happen:
🐾 Before breakfast
🐾 At dinner
🐾 Before a potty walk
🐾 While you're making coffee

Even better? Use your dog's regular breakfast or dinner instead of adding extra treats.

Those daily meals become opportunities to build skills while keeping life simple.

Your three minutes could include:
A few fun training games
Feeding from a Kong or puzzle
A scatter feed in the yard
Practicing simple cues
Working on calmness or focus
A movement puzzle

🎯 The goal isn't perfection.
The goal is creating small moments of success that fit naturally into your day.

Nine intentional minutes may not seem like much.....until you realize that's over 4½ hours of learning every month.

🐒 One of my students has found a whole new lease on life lately. More energy, more play, even a little chaos monkey. And now he follows his mom around the house all day, hopeful it might be training time. Maybe now? How about now? 😄

I love it. And it perfectly illustrates why we teach boundaries from a dog's very first session at Cool Dog Crew.

Here is the thing, though. I never talk about using a boundary to control a dog or make them stay. That is not what this is. We build the dog's ability to CHOOSE their boundary, because it has been so rewarding in their past. Instead of relying on fragile impulse control, we work upstream, helping the dog's brain anticipate calm emotions and get there faster. We are not building an on and off switch. We are building a dimmer.

In the new blog, I pull back the curtain on exactly how we do it. Why we never lure or cue the boundary in the beginning. Why chews and Kongs should appear on the bed. And why the best treat of all is the one your dog discovers when nobody is watching.
It is not magic, and I want you to feel empowered to do it yourself.

Here's a question worth sitting with: when was the last time you tried to pick up a Great Dane without his permission or cooperation?

Little dogs are picked up, passed around, and physically managed far more than large dogs, and trained far less. It's one of the most common ways we unintentionally undermine their confidence and trust in us.

But the myth that small dogs are just "more aggressive" by nature? That's not the dog. That's the environment.

With respect, clear communication, and actual training, little dogs are every bit as loving, cooperative, and fun as any big dog I've ever worked with. They just need us to meet them where they are — not scoop them up and hope for the best. 😄
