Special Online Course Coming!!! 154 years ago, Gen. Lee's Army began crossing the Potomac into Maryland and the first northern/Union major town they would come to would be Frederick, Maryland. Less than a week later, an unlikely hero, a 95 year-old woman, stood firm in her Union convictions and dared wave a Union flag in the faces of the southern invaders. Or did she? Learn more about the tale that went "viral" during the Civil War era, and put the name of Frederick, MD on countless tongues thanks to a poem by John Greenleaf Whittier. The anniversary of this alleged event is Thursday, September 10th, and historian Chris Haugh will be presenting a 2-hour class via Zoom from 7-9pm. Wednesday, September 9th, join historian Chris Haugh for a special "Great Frederick Fair" walking tour of Mount Olivet Cemetery. We will visit gravesites of early Agricultural Society/Fair Board presidents and others with unique connections to the annual event that celebrates our farming roots. Tour runs from 6-8pm and covers about a mile within the historic section of the grounds. Cost is $20/person (with walk-ups welcome), meet at the Key Chapel behind the Francis Scott Key Monument. Two things you won't see displayed at the Great Frederick Fair are large rock bolulders and dinosaurs! In the same regard, a "Prehistory of Frederick" course should be devoid of talk regarding sheep shearing, funnel cake, and the "Hoochie Coochie Girls";) You can achieve a knowledge of both local subjects in my upcoming classes on both subjects: History of the Great Frederick Fair (starts Wed, Aug 26, 6-8pm) and the Prehistory of Frederick, MD (starts Mon, Aug 17, 1-3pm).
