On this day in 1896, Civil War photographer Mathew Brady died in a New York hospital. His stunning photographs documenting the war have been studied by historians for more than 150 years. Brady photographed the war at his own expense assuming the government would purchase the photos. When they refused, he went into bankruptcy. Congress later approved $25,000 but Brady had spent $100,000. He became an alcoholic and died in the charity ward of the hospital. See his collection of photos for free here: http://fnote.it/6x62
