Cadet Orchestra Earns Top Honors at Spring Adjudication
WALKERSVILLE, Md. — The Frederick High School Orchestra delivered an outstanding performance Thursday, earning all Superior ratings at the Frederick County Public Schools (FCPS) Spring Orchestra Adjudication held at Walkersville High School.
With their performance, the Cadets not only achieved the highest possible marks from adjudicators, but also secured the top overall score among all FCPS high school orchestras.
The annual Music Performance Assessment (MPA) is a rigorous evaluation designed to challenge and elevate student musicians. Ensembles perform selected pieces for a panel of expert adjudicators, who assess both musicality and technical ex*****on. Ratings range from I (Superior) to II (Excellent) and beyond, with detailed feedback provided to help programs continue to grow.
Frederick’s clean ex*****on, strong tone quality, and musical expression stood out throughout the performance, reflecting months of preparation and dedication.
The achievement marks a significant milestone for the Cadet Orchestra and highlights the continued excellence of Frederick High School’s performing arts program.

Cadets Edge Brunswick 5-4 in Season-Opening Thriller
FREDERICK, Md. — The Cadet junior varsity girls lacrosse team opened its season in exciting fashion Wednesday evening, securing a hard-fought 5-4 home victory over Brunswick at Cadet Stadium.
Frederick set the tone early, taking a 3-2 lead into halftime behind first-half goals from Gia Rios, Laila Castillo, and Rowan Wilbur. The Cadets carried that momentum into the second half, where Chinaza Emejue and Aubrey Anderson each found the back of the net. Anderson’s goal proved to be the difference, standing as the game-winner in a tightly contested matchup.
Defensively, the Cadets were anchored by standout play in goal from Lena Duran Rizo, who turned away nine shots to preserve the victory. Maeve Day controlled possession with three draw controls, while Dasha Silue dominated the ground game, leading all players with seven ground balls.
With the win, the Cadets begin their season 1-0, showing resilience and balance on both ends of the field.

CADETS EDGE LEOPARDS IN DEFENSIVE BATTLE, 5–4, IN SEASON OPENER
SMITHSBURG, Md. — The Frederick High School varsity girls lacrosse team opened its season with a gritty 5–4 victory over host Smithsburg on Monday afternoon, leaning on a dominant defensive effort to secure the win.
The Cadets set the tone early, forcing 14 Smithsburg turnovers and limiting the Leopards to just two free-position goals in the first half. Frederick carried a narrow 3–2 lead into halftime and never relinquished control, holding off Smithsburg down the stretch behind more standout defensive play.
Senior defender Syl Apshago anchored the unit with an impressive performance, collecting five ground balls and forcing three turnovers. In goal, sophomore Lena Duran Rizo delivered a strong showing with 10 saves, keeping the Leopards’ offense in check throughout the contest.
At the draw, senior Jaz Wilson played a key role in maintaining possession, winning 7 of 12 draws — including several crucial wins in the second half to help Frederick manage the clock and momentum.
Offensively, Nora Davis led the way with a hat trick, while Tiffany Raines added two goals and an assist, including a key connection with Davis. McKayla McNamee also contributed with an assist in the victory.
Frederick’s balanced effort on both ends of the field proved to be the difference, as the Cadets opened their 2026 campaign with a hard-fought road win.

Cadets Indoor Guard Earns Regional Gold, Posts Season-High Score
HAGERSTOWN, Md. — March 21, 2026 — The Cadets Indoor Guard continued its impressive run Saturday afternoon, capturing first place at the Keystone Indoor Drill Association (KIDA) Regional Championships held at North Hagerstown High School.
Performing their 2026 production, “A Pirate’s After-Life for Me,” the Cadets delivered a polished and confident routine that stood out among the competition. The performance showcased the group’s continued growth and refinement as they push deeper into the postseason.
Their efforts earned a top overall score of 76.74 — their highest mark of the season — securing the regional gold medal and advancing them to next weekend’s championships at Chambersburg High School.
With momentum on their side, the Cadets now turn their focus to the final stage of the season, aiming to carry their success into the championship round.

SOTO COMMITS TO FROSTBURG STATE, CONTINUING CADET DISTANCE LEGACY
FREDERICK, Md. — Senior standout Ysebelle Soto is taking her talents to the next level, announcing her verbal commitment to continue her cross country and track and field career at Frostburg State University (chatgpt://generic-entity?number=0), an NCAA Division II program located in Frostburg (chatgpt://generic-entity?number=1).
Soto selected the Bobcats over offers from Wilmington University (chatgpt://generic-entity?number=2) and Morgan State University (chatgpt://generic-entity?number=3), citing an immediate connection with the program during her visit.
“After visiting Frostburg State and meeting the coaches and getting to talk with my potential professor, I knew instantly Frostburg State is somewhere I would be successful both on and off the track,” Soto said. “The coaches made me feel very welcomed along with the athletes, which all together made FSU stand out from my other options.”

Senior Luke Acerenza kicked off the 2026 season in style, launching a two-run shot over the left-center fence to give the Cadets a 2-0 lead in the first inning of their opener against defending state champion Brunswick.
The Cadets went on to win 10-7 and start the season 1-0.
