Calvary Weekday School

The Calvary United Methodist Church Weekday School supports the philosophy that children learn best through active involvement with a rich and stimulating environment. The Weekday School is based on the Maryland State Department of Education approved Creative Curriculum for Preschool. The Creative Curriculum is rooted in educational philosophy and theory as well as practice. It relies heavily on Erik Erikson’s stages of socio-educational development, Jean Piaget’s theories of how children think and learn, and on principals of physical development. The Creative Curriculum includes activity and learning centers that are developmentally and age appropriate. The classroom environment invites children to observe, be active, make choices, and to experiment. Teachers respect students as individuals—each with unique interest, experiences, and abilities. Small classes enable the Weekday School’s teachers to observe the individual learning styles of their students and strive to teach so that each child’s learning needs are met. The goal of the Weekday School is for all children to enjoy learning in a creative, positive and safe environment. The experienced teaching staff of the Weekday School encourage children to develop strong self-esteem and social competence by solving problems and resolving conflicts in a climate of positive regard. In this way, children learn life-long personal and social skills. The school year for Calvary Weekday School is from September thru May, with core school hours of 9 a.m. – Noon, and Monday afternoon classes from 12:30 p.m. – 3 p.m. Calvary offers 3-days-a-week classes for 3-Year-Olds, with a choice of Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings, or Monday afternoon and Tuesday and Thursday mornings. For 4-Year-Olds, Calvary offers two 3-days-a-week options, on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings as well as Monday afternoon and Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Calvary Weekday School also offers a 5-days-a-week education for 4-Year-Olds, taking place Monday thru Friday mornings.
