You don’t usually see bolt tension change. With SmartBolts®, you can.
Watch the indicator darken as tension increases, then return to red as tension is released.
SmartBolts aren’t one and done. When used within the fastener’s elastic limits, they can be tightened and loosened repeatedly throughout the fastener’s service life.
Bolt tension made visible, cycle after cycle.

SmartBolts
Real-time visual indication of bolt preload, so you can know at a glance it's tight.
Fastener installation and inspection has never been more safe, accurate, and fast — with visual Direct Tension Indicating SmartBolts®. With SmartBolts® you’ll know FOR CERTAIN whether critical joints are tight at installation and whether they remain tight throughout the service life of the fastener.

Throwback Thursday: The story behind SmartBolts®
What if a bolt could show you when it is properly tightened and when it is loose? That’s what Chuck Popenoe asked way back in 1966!
Chuck was an aerospace engineer, applied physicist and prolific inventor. He had seen a bolt with a visual tension indicator, but it would only show tension for one tightening cycle and was not reusable. What the world needed was an indicator that would accurately show tension through repeated tightening and loosening, so he set out to create one.
With 35 U.S. and international patents to his name, Chuck patented his Direct Tension Indicator bolt design in 1966. He later developed the concept into SmartBolts®, making changes in fastener tension visible through a red-to-black color change.
Precision defined Chuck’s career. At the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), he designed a system to measure and certify light bulb output against industry standards. When the SmartBolts team visited NIST in 2012, the system was still in use, 30 years after Chuck retired.
Chuck believed inventing required imagination, visualization and persistence. Those principles remain at the heart of SmartBolts today, making hidden tension visible so teams can see when their critical joints need attention.

When conveyor pulley bolts lose tension, alignment is usually the next problem.
And once alignment shifts, wear, downtime and bigger maintenance issues can follow.
These critical bolted connections all depend on proper tension to stay secure under constant load, vibration, and impact:
- Bearing Blocks
- Pulley Mounts & Hubs
- Drive & Take-Up Frames
- Idler Frames
SmartBolts® provide a clear way to verify bolt tension during installation and routine walk-arounds. The patented Visual Indication System™ makes tension changes visible at a glance, helping maintenance teams quickly see when a critical joint may need attention.

In many bolted joints, preload variation can reach ±25% to ±35%, even when calibrated tools and correct procedures are used.
Why? Because torque does not directly measure tension. Changes in temperature, lubrication, contamination, and thread condition all alter friction and affect how torque translates into clamp force.
Uncertainty in true clamp force can quickly turn your critical bolted connections into catastrophic failure — heavy mobile plant can go offline, conveyor belts can stop and trains can derail.
Our patented Visual Indication System™ measures bolt stretch and provides a real-time visual indication of actual clamp force. By making tension visible, SmartBolts® provide you with the knowledge needed so you can stop guessing as to whether your bolt is properly tensioned and rely on the facts you need to keep your critical joints secure.
❌ Traditional torque methods: ±25% to ±35% tension variation
✅ SmartBolts®: ~±10% tension accuracy
There's a real difference between recording a torque value and verifying that the joint is secure.

Another SmartBolts® order heading out.
This batch of black oxide-coated SmartBolts is going to a long-standing manufacturing customer for hoist lift ring applications.
The bolt’s offset neck provides clearance for flipping moulds, dies and other fixtures. They allow 180° forward and backward bail movement, with a body that can swivel around the mounted axis point to support die-flipping, pivot-and-rotate, and side-lifting loads.
These SmartBolts include contamination seals, a protective coating and a Data Shield feature, protecting the Visual Indication System™ so you can still clearly see clamp force in demanding operating conditions.

What happens when swing gearbox bolts lose tension?
When swing gearbox bolts lose tension, the joint can start to move under vibration, dynamic loading, and continuous machine movement.
This can lead to misalignment, accelerated wear, component stress, and unplanned maintenance on mining excavators.
Torque checks can also be difficult to rely on, as readings may be affected by friction, lubrication and surface conditions.
SmartBolts® help address this by providing a visual indication of actual bolt tension, allowing technicians to quickly assess bolt condition during inspection.
🔴 Red means loose.
⚫ Black means tight.
No batteries. No sensors. No specialised inspection equipment.
Just SmartBolts.
Ideal for swing gearbox applications on CAT 6030, 6040 and 6050 mining excavators.
