The first days of school are filled with so many little moments of wonder-and the past couple of days were no exception.
At Miss Amy’s Neighborhood Preschool, we believe children deserve a childhood where they have
~the freedom to get messy
~the space to wander
~the opportunity to explore, investigate, question, and wonder.
Simply the time to be children.
Alongside that freedom comes intentional teaching, meaningful conversation, and opportunities to grow.
Our classrooms were filled with children gathering together to share ideas, recognize letters, strengthen fine-motor skills, build vocabulary, practice problem solving skills, listen to one another, and make connections.
Because learning doesn’t always look like sitting at a table with a worksheet.
Sometimes learning looks like muddy hands.
Sometimes it looks like a child asking, “I wonder why?”
Sometimes it happens while a teacher sits beside a child and asks one more question.
Sometimes it happens during a group conversation when a child realizes they have something important to contribute.
Play and purpose can coexist.
Curiosity and curriculum can coexist.
Child-led explorations and intentional teaching can coexist.
That’s the beauty of a Reggio-inspired, play-based environment. We don’t ask children to choose between learning and wonder- we create an environment where wonder becomes the pathway to learning.
Here’s to a new school year filled with messy hands, big questions, meaningful conversations, growing minds, and countless moments of discovery.
