One of my favorite end-of-the-year traditions is our ✨Flashlight Reading Day✨!
On one of the last days of school, my students bring in a blanket, I provide the flashlights, and we turn our desks into cozy reading forts. Watching them curl up with a good book under their desks is pure magic—and it’s the perfect way to kick off summer reading. 📚🔦
Before they leave for summer, I send them home with this Summer Reading Bingo challenge! The activities are simple, fun, and designed to keep kids excited about reading all summer long.
The best part? If they come back next school year with a completed bingo board, they earn a special prize from me! 🎉 It’s such an easy way to encourage reading without making it feel like homework.

✨ YES DAY… but make it classroom-friendly! ✨
One of my favorite ways to celebrate the end of the school year (or kick off summer school) is with a Classroom YES Day! 🎉
For one special day, students get a little extra say in their learning and classroom experience. Think:
✅ Extra recess
✅ Snack time
✅ Sit on top of their desk while they work
✅ Read with a flashlight
✅ Choose their seat
✅ And so much more!
Everything is school-appropriate, safe, and designed to create unforgettable memories while giving students a little autonomy and ownership over their day. ❤️
To make it easy, I created a Classroom YES Day resource packed with ready-to-print YES cards, signs, planning materials, and more!

☀️ Starting summer school soon? This simple paper bag hack is a lifesaver! ☀️
Turn inexpensive paper grocery bags into student vests in just a few minutes! They’re perfect for helping students feel part of the group from day one and make summer learning feel a little more fun.
I’m using these with my Student Camp activities, but they would also be great for:
🏕️ Summer school themes
⭐ Team challenges
🎯 Learning stations
📚 Reading camps
🧪 STEM days
🤝 Building classroom community
The best part? I grabbed the bags from Wegmans for just $0.05 each! If you’re using Trader Joe’s bags, just cut off the handles and flip them inside out.
Save this idea if you’re teaching summer school and looking for easy, budget-friendly ways to make your students excited to walk through the door! ☀️
