Twenty-five years ago today, I was working at Denver International Airport.
Our construction team was on the runways when reports of the attacks started coming over the radio. As it became clear that commercial aircraft were involved, I remember thinking that an airport might not be the safest place for our team to be.
I contacted the site supervisor and suggested that he evacuate the team. I left shortly afterward. Most of our team stayed and were later detained until authorities cleared them to leave.
It is a day I will never forget.
Today, the focus should remain on the 2,977 people who were killed, the families who have carried that loss for 25 years, and everyone who responded when our country needed them.
I also wanted to recognize a part of the story that is especially meaningful to those of us in construction.
Construction workers spent months helping with the recovery at Ground Zero. Years later, other tradespeople returned to the same site to help build One World Trade Center and reshape the World Trade Center site.
Most of their names will never be widely known, but their work remains part of the story.
Never forget.
