Getting certified shouldnโ€™t be the last time an operator receives meaningful training until itโ€™s time to renew.

Equipment changes. Crews change. Jobsite conditions change. And over time, even experienced operators can develop habits or knowledge gaps that no one catches because the card in their wallet is still current.

In the latest edition of The Lift Brief, Russ Gallivan takes a closer look at continued competency and asks an important question:

How long has it been since somebody actually taught your best operator something new?

Certification proves competency at a point in time. Continued training is what helps maintain and build it.

A great read for anyone responsible for crane operations, safety, training, or workforce development.

Too many organizations believe having a qualified crane operator is enough.

But what happens when that operator is unexpectedly unavailable?

A true safety culture doesn't rely on one personโ€”it prepares the entire team.

Cross-training, succession planning, and developing competent backup personnel help keep projects moving while reducing risk when the unexpected happens. Workforce development isn't just about meeting today's needs; it's about ensuring your team is ready for tomorrow's challenges.

Strong organizations don't wait for a problem to expose a weaknessโ€”they build resilience before they need it.

Russ Gallivan's latest article is a great reminder that investing in people is one of the best safety decisions any organization can make.
