As a new GMRS Radio user who spent a lot of time troubleshooting why my GMRS radios weren't getting hardly any range, and I wish I had known these tips and tricks as a beginning user.

In this video, I'll go over four basic tips on how to make sure you are getting more range out of your GMRS radios, including choosing the right antennas for your handhelds and base stations (high gain vs. low gain), positioning of your antenna, utilizing repeaters, and more.

When using repeaters, you have to account for coaxial cable power loss. When running a repeater connected through coaxial cable to antenna, you lose 20-30% of your repeater's capable output by the time your signal comes out of that antenna, making a high-powered base station even more necessary for extended range. Using a watt meter, I show how much wattage is truly delivered to the antenna after long cable runs, a crucial detail for any prepper. This information is key for understanding radio basics and optimizing your amateur radio setup.
