One year ago, Solstice was an idea and an empty room.
Today we watched our first class finish their first year and a few of our oldest friends graduated onto what’s next.

What grew here was never just a school. It was a community of families who trusted us before there was anything to point to, teachers, who poured themselves into everyday, and children who reminded us constantly what they’re capable of when you give them room to try.

Thank you for being our first. We’re not the same place we were in September and that’s because of you.

Can’t wait to see you in the fall🫶🏻

Every Friday at Solstice Montessori, the children prepare a recipe completely from scratch. Measuring, pouring, mixing, cracking eggs, and working together from start to finish.

In a world where most early childhood programs keep children away from real kitchen work, our students ages 3–6 actively prepare their own food using real ingredients and real tools. These experiences build confidence, independence, focus, coordination, and a genuine sense of capability from an early age.

Penny Polishing : Practical Life
She’s polishing pennies. In Montessori, we call this a Practical Life material.

But what does that actually mean?

Practical life materials teach real, every day skills, the things children see adults doing in the world. Cleaning. Polishing. Caring for the environment. They are activities that mirror real life.

Practical life grounds learning in reality. It shows children: this is how the world works.

She’s placed the numbers in order, and is matching counters underneath.
This material teaches her to connect the symbol (the number) with quantity (how many). But here is what is really happening. She’s discovering odd and even numbers through her own hands. Not through explanation. Through discovery.

The “Walk Around the Sun” is a birthday tradition where a child walks around a central candle carrying a globe, once for every year of their life.
As the child completes each orbit, the parent shares a milestone and a photo from that specific year of the child’s life. The ceremony is accompanied by a song and concluded with the child blowing out the candle and sharing a treat.

The lesson: it turns the abstract concept of a year into a tangible physical experience, highlights the child growth and personal history, and it links the birthday to the earth’s natural orbit.
