Future Generations University promotes research, learning, and action through its academic and community engagement programs. It offers a Master of Arts in Applied Community Change and various certificate programs. Don't forget! This Thursday, Out of the Woods hosts Dr. Cheryl Frank Sullivan for her seminar, "What Lies Beneath the Saplines: The Hidden Dangers of Ticks in Sugarbushes" in our free webinar series!

The segment of the population most at risk of contracting one of the several diseases transmitted by ticks are those who work and recreate near tick habitat. Sugarmakers and other agricultural producers are prime targets! This talk will cover tick ID, life cycles, disease-causing pathogens they carry, bite prevention tips, research results from sugarbush studies and more.

Dr. Jiles has over 28 years of progressive and effective administrative and visionary leadership in both the public and private sectors, including more than 15 years in higher education. He has served as dean, division and program chair, tenured professor, and chair/member of various committees, and worked collaboratively on projects locally, regionally, statewide, and nationally.

From all at FGU, we welcome Dr. Jiles as we collaborate to build a brighter future for generations to come.

An idea can remain with us long before the moment arrives to act on it.

Approximately two years ago, Future Generations University student Aarju Bhandari wrote an idea in her journal: a platform that would bring greater visibility to impactful, innovative, and inspiring work taking place across Nepal.

The idea stayed with her. Then, in January 2026, Aarju participated in the FGU Nepal Field Course.
Through experiential learning, conversations, and visits highlighting locally driven change, the field course helped Aarju recognize the importance of documenting and sharing the ideas emerging from communities and entrepreneurs in Nepal. It gave her renewed inspiration—and the momentum to begin.

Soon afterward, Aarju transformed her journaled idea into Nepal Next Thinkers, a Nepali-language social media platform highlighting sustainable enterprises, creative solutions, women entrepreneurs, and business opportunities that might otherwise remain unseen.

Nepal Next Thinkers is guided by three words: impact, innovation, and inspiration.

Aarju’s experience demonstrates how education can build upon ideas and knowledge that students already carry with them. The field course did not give Aarju her idea; it helped her recognize that the time had come to act on it.

Cheryl Frank Sullivan, Research Assistant Professor, University of Vermont, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Department of Agriculture, Landscape and Environment. Cheryl is an Entomologist and, for over 20 years, has specialized in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and biological control of insects and mites. Her research activities are two-fold and focus on vector ecology and management (ticks) and agricultural pest management in specialty crops. She also provides one-on-one assistance to agricultural producers with all aspects of IPM.

Community is defined not only by place, but by the ability to act together.

On September 27, Super Roadies, a community group that includes Future Generations University alumnus Hitul Patel, Class of 2026, organized the Mega Blood Donation Camp 2026 in Vadodara, India.

With support from Dhwani Blood Bank Vadodara and local sponsors, the group collected 82 units of blood—each one representing the potential to help patients and families in moments of critical need.

Super Roadies is not a formal organization. It is a group of coworkers connected by shared concerns and a commitment to address challenges in their community. Their work reflects a central principle of SEED-SCALE: a community is a group of people who share something in common and have the capacity to act together.

Hitul’s journey at Future Generations University focused on this community and the work its members are accomplishing together. During the event, Dr. Ghanish Panjwani, Senior Oncologist Surgeon at Goraj Muni Seva Ashram, also recognized Hitul for earning his master’s degree.

No two student journeys at Future Generations University are the same. Our program works because students apply their learning to the interests, communities, and challenges that matter to them.

Discover How Conservation, Tourism, and Enterprise Connect in Fort Portal 🇺🇬

During the 2027 Uganda Field-Based Course, participants will travel to the Fort Portal area to explore local governance, community-based tourism, agriculture, and small enterprise.

Planned learning experiences include Kabarole District Local Government, KRC Uganda, Mpanga Market, Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, crater-lake landscapes, and enterprises involved in dairy, coffee, and agro-processing.

Participants will investigate how producers, traders, local officials, community organizations, and conservation initiatives contribute to livelihoods and regional development.

How can tourism and conservation generate meaningful community benefits? How do small enterprises create opportunities for women and young people? Join us in Uganda to explore these questions firsthand.

Sprout School is the cornerstone of Youth Education at Future Generations University, and it continues to grow with its largest participation to date in anticipation of its fourth cohort.

Sprout School is a training program designed to support educators interested in implementing youth agriculture and local product sourcing in their pedagogy. Virtual sessions and learning labs connect these educators with subject matter experts to create curriculum and explore avenues for youth education. Sprout School participants also receive a materials budget and a stipend for participation.
