SHSST was pleased to welcome Fr. Joseph Carola, SJ, the seminary’s new delegate from the Pontifical Gregorian University, for a special evening celebrating the publication of his historical novel, Dragons: A Roman Requiem.
As the new delegate responsible for Sacred Heart’s affiliation for the STB, his visit provided an opportunity for members of the seminary community to meet him and learn more about his work and ministry.
The evening began with a special 5:15 p.m. Vespers. Following Vespers, students, seminarians, faculty, and staff gathered in the dining room for heavy hors d’oeuvres and fellowship.
At 6:30 p.m., Fr. Carola shared selections from Dragons: A Roman Requiem, offering attendees a glimpse into the historical fiction that explores the dramatic story of the Roman College, now the Pontifical Gregorian University, from its resurrection in the 1820s through its persecution following Italian unification in the 1870s.

The evening concluded with a book signing, giving members of the Sacred Heart community an opportunity to visit with Fr. Carola personally and have copies of his novel signed.

A Blessed Beginning to the New Academic Year!
The new academic year was commemorated yesterday, August 26, with the annual Holy Mass for the Opening of the Academic Year, entrusting the year ahead to the Lord and asking His grace and guidance for our community.
Following Mass, students and employees gathered for a joyful welcome dinner. The evening was filled with warm fellowship, lively conversation, and the joy of welcoming new members of our community. We were especially pleased to introduce our new students and employees and to begin the year together in gratitude, friendship, and faith.
As we embark on this new academic year, we pray that God may continue to bless our community.

Schedule of the evening:
5:00 PM Mass on the Kayak on the SHSST grounds
6:00 PM Community Dinner in the SHSST Dining Room
Followed by a closing prayer and short reflection by Fr. Ziggy

More about the Mass on the Kayak: As a young priest in Poland, Father Karol Wojtyła, later Pope St. John Paul II, famously organized wilderness outings with youth and university students. During these excursions, he often celebrated Holy Mass using an upturned kayak or canoe as a field altar allowing the attendees to join in a shared appreciation for God's creation.
Inspired by this beautiful tradition, we invite you to experience a unique celebration of faith and reconnect with the SHSST community.
This event is not required, but alumni always enjoy reconnecting with the faculty and staff if you are able to attend!

We were pleased to have President-Rector Fr. Stephen Huffstetter, SCJ, and our Director of International Students, attend the 2026 CMSM Assembly in Phoenix, Arizona.

The gathering brought together leaders of men’s religious communities for prayer, fellowship, and dialogue.

SHSST is grateful for this opportunity to connect with religious leaders from across the country and to share in the mission of strengthening religious life and formation.
