Welcome to Macon County Schools

Located in the scenic southwestern part of the state, Macon County is one of the fastest growing counties in North Carolina. There are eleven schools in the Macon County Schools system. There are four elementary schools, one intermediate, one middle, and one high school located within an eight-mile radius of Franklin, the county seat. There are two k-12 schools,

one in Nantahala and one in Highlands. Union Academy is a 6-12 school and we have one early college high school. VISION

Today marks the beginning of a brand-new school year, and we couldn’t be more excited to welcome our students, staff, and families back!

We are so excited to welcome our students back and kick off an amazing new school year!

Our classrooms are ready, our teachers and staff are excited, and we can’t wait to see our schools filled with smiling faces, new friendships, big dreams, and lots of learning! The 2026-27 school year is already underway in many North Carolina school districts, with many more welcoming students back over the next two weeks. That means the big yellow buses are back on the roads!

Leave yourself a little extra time, be patient and stay alert around school buses and bus stops.

Did you know passing a stopped school bus can result in a $500 fine and five points on your driver’s license? If a driver strikes a child, this becomes a felony.

The Macon County School-Based Health Center (SBHC) is an extension of services offered through Macon County Public Health and will be available weekdays throughout the school year.
