A patient may struggle with exercise on land without being “not ready” to progress.

Aquatic physical therapy is more than moving the same exercises into a pool. Buoyancy changes loading demands. Water provides multidirectional resistance. The environment can also create new ways to address strength, endurance, gait, and balance for appropriately selected adult patients.

The clinical question is not whether water makes exercise easier. It is how the properties of water can be used with purpose—and how aquatic interventions can support the broader rehabilitation plan.

In Summit’s upcoming live webinar, Aquatic Physical Therapy for the Adult Patient, Heather Popp, PT, DPT, NCS, will review the foundations and benefits of the aquatic environment, examine research across adult diagnoses and patient populations, and discuss practical aquatic exercises for common functional impairments.
