FAQ 1: Do you have any tips for getting my student to practice?
Answer: Absolutely!
1. Remember to make practice a positive experience. Students thrive on encouragement.
2. Help your student connect practice time to an already established routine. For example, putting practice right after dinner. This will allow the routine to remind them when it is time to practice.
3. Some students practice better in smaller chunks. Instead of practicing 30 minutes at once, it might be better to block out 10 minutes in the morning and 20 minutes in the evening, etc.
4. Some students feel overwhelmed. If this is the case, I recommend sitting down and helping them break down what they need to do into smaller "practice tasks" assigned each day. (If this seems daunting, please feel free to ask me for help.)
5. A little reverse psychology: Try treating piano practice as a reward instead of a requirement. "After you finish your chores, you GET to practice." 😉
6. Give your student a goal. The goal size isn't as important, so it could be a competition or a performance for grandma, but having something to work toward can be a HUGE encouragement to practice.

New in our area: Violins of Hope
"The Nashville Symphony and the Jewish Federation of Nashville & Middle Tennessee have partnered to bring the "Violins of Hope" to Nashville. These restored instruments were played by Jewish musicians during The Holocaust, surviving concentration camps, pogroms and many long journeys to tell remarkable stories of injustice, suffering, resilience and survival.
More than two dozen local groups and organizations will present a community-wide series of events around these instruments, highlighted by a free public exhibition of the Violins of Hope at the Nashville Public Library. The sound, presence and stories of these instruments will drive the creation of music, visual art, theater, public conversation, interfaith dialogue, readings and educational activities throughout Middle Tennessee."
