BLACK HISTORY MONTH MOMENT #10
Alpha Phi Alpha (ΑΦΑ) is the FIRST African American, inter-collegiate Greek-lettered fraternity. Initially a literary and social studies club founded in Dec 1905 by Charles Cardoza Poindexter. The group later evolved into a fraternity with a founding date of December 4, 1906 at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. Its aims are "manly deeds, scholarship, and love for all mankind," and its motto is "First of All, Servants of All, We Shall Transcend All." Chapters were chartered at Howard University and Virginia Union University in 1907. Members of Alpha Phi Alpha include Jamaican Prime Minister Norman Manley, Nobel Prize winner Martin Luther King, Jr., Olympian Jesse Owens, Justice Thurgood Marshall, United Nations Ambassador Andrew Young, singer Lionel Richie and Atlanta mayor Maynard Jackson.

Wilberforce University is a private, coed, liberal arts historically black university (HBCU) located in Wilberforce, Ohio. It was the FIRST college to be owned and operated by African Americans.
The founding of the college was unique as a collaboration in 1856 by the Cincinnati, Ohio Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church and the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME). They planned a college to provide classical education and teacher training for black youth. Leaders of both races made up the first board members.The college attracted the top professors of the day, including W. E. B. Du Bois.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH MOMENT #8

In May of 2015, Rhema Johnson, Shaunye Burton, and Malik Phillips made Southampton High School (Courtland, VA) history by being the FIRST African American students to earn a General Studies Associate Degree before their high school graduation. This was a huge accomplishment. They completed 61 credit hours of college courses through the Paul D. Camp Community College (Franklin, VA) Dual Enrollment Program with GPAs of 3.9 on a 4.0 scale, while also completing their high school requirements for graduation. This has mad it possible for each one of them to earn their bachelor degrees by 2017. Rhema attends Temple University, while Shaunye & Malik attend the University of Virginia. Black History still being made in 2015!

BLACK HISTORY MONTH MOMENT #7

Brigadier General Sheila R. Baxter, a 25+ year career officer is the FIRST female general officer in the Army Medical Service Corps is. When asked how it felt to be the highest-ranking female in the Corps, the general responded, "I thank God for the promotion because I will be able to help soldiers and advance the Army's agenda." She is a graduate of FRANKLIN HIGH SCHOOL and Virginia State University where she was commissioned in the ROTC, she holds a master's degree in health services management from Webster University. She is a licensed evangelist with the Church of God In Christ and a member of AKA Sorority.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH MOMENT #6
James McCune Smith (April 18, 1813 – November 17, 1865) was an American physician, apothecary, abolitionist, and author. He is the FIRST African American to hold a medical degree and graduated at the top in his class at the University of Glasgow, Scotland. He was the first African American to run a pharmacy in the United States. He has been most well known for his leadership as an abolitionist; a member of the American Anti-Slavery Society, with Frederick Douglass he helped start the National Council of Colored People in 1853, the first permanent national organization for blacks. Douglass said that Smith was "the single most important influence on his life." Smith was one of the Committee of Thirteen, who organized in 1850 in New York City to resist the newly passed Fugitive Slave Law by aiding fugitive slaves through the Underground Railroad.

Ralph Johnson Bunche (August 7, 1903 or 1904 - December 9, 1971) was an American political scientist, academic, and diplomat who received the 1950 Nobel Peace Prize for his late 1940s mediation in Israel. He was the FIRST African American and the first American person of color to be so honored in the history of the prize. He was involved in the formation and administration of the United Nations. In 1963, he was awarded the Medal of Freedom by President John F. Kennedy.

Virginia State University is a historically black land-grant university located north of the Appomattox River in Ettrick, Virginia, near Petersburg. Founded on March 6, 1882, Virginia State developed as the United States's FIRST fully state-supported four-year institution of higher learning for black Americans.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH MOMENT #3
Robert Abbott - First Black Millionaire:
Born in 1870 to formerly enslaved parents, Abbott attended Hampton Institute in Virginia and then went on to graduate from Kent Law School (now Chicago-Kent College of Law in Illinois) in 1899. In May 1905 he started publishing the Chicago Defender. In the early years he personally sold subscriptions to the paper and advertising by going door to door. In the burgeoning economic times of the 1920s, with hundreds of new products and the growth of advertising, the Defender became an economic success and Abbott became one of the first African American millionaires. He died in Chicago in 1940, with the Defender still a success.

Mary Jane Patterson (September 12, 1840 – September 24, 1894) was the first African-American woman to receive a B.A degree in 1862. She died at her Washington, D. C. home, September 24, 1894, at the age of 54. Although she is a not well-known figure, Mary Jane Patterson was a pioneer in black education and paved the way for other black female educators.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH MOMENT #1
Alexander Lucius Twilight (September 23, 1795 – June 19, 1857), born free in Vermont, was the first African-American person known to have earned a bachelor's degree from an American college or university upon graduating from Middlebury College in 1823. An educator, minister and politician, he was licensed as a Congregational preacher, and worked in ministry and education all his career. In 1829 Twilight became principal of the Orleans County Grammar School. There he designed and built Athenian Hall, the first granite public building in the state. In 1836 he was the first African American elected as a state legislator, serving in the Vermont General Assembly.
