Our New November Course Offerings!

I’ve been working really hard this past month with my first grader on number bonds. Using manipulatives such as the stacking blocks, sand paper numbers and red rods have been really helpful for this activity. I started by having her place the correct amount of blocks next to each number up to 10. A little disappointed that my sand paper numbers did not come with a 10 card 🙄 but I made it work.

After that I had her work from 1 creating number bonds. How many different ways can we make 1, 2, 3, 4 etc all the way up to 10. This activity took a couple of weeks reinforcing with the manipulatives and then writing them as well on paper every time she found a bond. Once I felt she was comfortable with this we moved slowly to addition sheets with picture problems where I then introduced the number line to her, which allowed her to be able to jump numbers in the line in order to add, which she did very easily, and now to numerical addition problems (with accompanying pictures to still count from if needed).

Yesterday she was so proud of herself as she happily completed several pages of addition problems with ease.

What started off as a very difficult and frustrating task, became enjoyable with a little encouragement consistency and use of hands on manipulatives to enforce abstract concepts.

I plan to move on to subtraction once I feel she is confident with adding. ❤️
