๐Ÿฆ Sneak Peek into the Future of Fresh, US-Grown Shrimp! ๐Ÿฆ

Last week, Dr. Ray, Chair of Kentucky State Universityโ€™s School of Aquaculture and Aquatic Science, alongside research associate Marissa Bermeo, traveled to the Midwest to visit two innovative shrimp operations: Simply Shrimp LLC and PurBlu Shrimp.

Hereโ€™s why what theyโ€™re doing is a huge deal for fresh, local seafood:

Minnesota Shrimp Company runs one of the few hatcheries in the entire US producing "post larvae" (baby shrimp!). Having a steady source of baby shrimp right here at home is a total game-changer for American farmers looking to stock their tanks.

PurBlu Shrimp Farm is flexing some serious tech! Theyโ€™re using futuristic "photo-bioreactors" to clean ammonia out of their water naturallyโ€”making them one of only five farms in the Midwest trying this cutting-edge approach.

Dr. Ray and Marissa shared expert tips on boosting shrimp health and keeping water quality top-notch. As the worldโ€™s leading indoor shrimp farming research team, weโ€™re super excited to support local farmers pushing the boundaries of sustainable seafood! ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ’ง

Weโ€™re at the Kentucky State Fair with the Kentucky State Universityโ€™s School of Aquaculture and Aquatic Science!

Check out this full aquaponics system in action:

-The Fish produce nutrient-rich waste in the bottom tank.

-The Plants absorb those nutrients to grow fresh, local greens.

-The Loop filters the water naturally and sends it right back to the fish!

From sustainable marine farming to hands-on STEM education, KSU SAAS is bringing cutting-edge agriculture straight to our community.

As classes begin this week, we are thrilled to welcome our new faculty dedicated to guiding the next generation of aquatic scientists. Today, we highlight Dr. Dayan Perera, Assistant Professor of Pond Management and Aquaculture Extension at Kentucky State University's School of Aquaculture and Aquatic Science!

Dr. Perera joins us with more than two decades of international experience in aquaculture education and Extension, including recent work at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. In his new role, he leads Kentucky's statewide Aquaculture and Pond Management Extension programโ€”delivering practical solutions for water quality, fish health, aquatic w**d control, and sustainable production to landowners and industry professionals across the Commonwealth.

"I believe some of the most rewarding work happens in the field, working directly with stakeholders to solve real-world challenges," shares Dr. Perera. "I'm excited to build those relationships across Kentucky."

Welcome to KSU, Dr. Perera!
