In Development - Secrets of the Universe:

Uncover some of the secrets of light and energy by testing the same experiments used by some of history's greatest scientists, including Isaac Newton, Thomas Young, and Ibn al-Haytham. Use lasers, sunlight, refractive elements, optical barriers, and a little geometry to uncover some of the most surprising and useful properties of light, and discover the surprising result that lies at the heart of modern quantum mechanics.

This crate is recommended for 10th-grade and above; students must be able to use low-power lasers safely, and basic algebra and trigonometry understanding is required to get full benefit from this crate.

In Development - Music from Air:

Explore and understand the auditory world with the "Music from Air Crate". Learn how to play a musical instrument, read music notation, compose your own songs, create your own musical instrument, visualize sound, and learn about the physics of air pressure waves! Each crate comes with two beginner-friendly musical instruments, tools for creating a tunable string instrument, full-color instructions and a miniature reference poster. Some supplemental resources may require use of a web browser and/or mobile device.

This crate is recommended for 3rd-grade and above; students must be able to read and follow instructions.

About Brain Crates:

Brain Crates are mail-order boxes that bring exploratory educational experiences into the home. Brain Crates are available for many different aspects of STEAM education, and are meant to help fill the gaps left by other educational services, particularly in light of school closures and distance learning. Our carefully designed activities bring learning into the hands of students and give them the tools to discover and enrich their world.

About our Pedagogy:

Brain Crates are designed to tap into the educational benefits of self-motivated project-based learning. Students will start with a core introductory activity lasting about an hour that is heavily guided and designed to introduce them to the topic of the crate. There are a further 10 hours of follow-up content and activities that help students to deepen and broaden their understanding of the topic. But a student's engagement with a crate doesn't have to end there. Every crate concludes with some open-ended activities that reward creativity and initiative, and could give passionate students hundreds of hours of further exploration.

Our crates are curated by Sam Saarinen, an award-winning instructor, educational researcher, and author of the book, "Education: The Next Hundred Years".
