Talia Adry, a Visiting Lecturer in the English Department, is currently working on a book project which examines the lasting effects of adolescent trauma, and the difficulty in seeking help when the subject is deemed taboo. Grounded in research by feminist writers and political thinkers, Adry seeks to reach further back from women’s social and political realities to focus on the challenges girls face as they enter maturation.

Adry’s work investigates the intersections of poverty, sexual assault, and reproductive justice. Her first book, Complicit (Volume I), centers around a disturbing adolescent relationship with a 32-year-old man and its resulting fallout twenty years later. Told in series of flashbacks and present-day meditations, Complicit weaves the early 2000s, the year of the pandemic, and the years post-Roe, examining such issues as consent and abortion within these contexts.

Register today for an upcoming hybrid Scholarly & Creative Showcase featuring Professor Talia Adry and Dr. Bryan Counter, two visiting lecturers from Framingham State University's English Department. https://bit.ly/CELTSS26Showcase

Join us for a reading and conversation on literature’s ability to recount hardship without falling into problematic tropes, and the difficulty in defining genre when the subject is life itself.

The first of three volumes, Adry’s memoir, Complicit, centers around the disjunction between the narratives we tell ourselves, and the ones we seek to define in the world. Set in Framingham in the early 2000s, Adry chronicles a disturbing adolescent relationship with a 32-year-old man and examines such issues as consent and abortion in a post-Roe era.

Told in a series of flashbacks and present-day meditations, Complicit examines the intersections of poverty, single-parent households, sexual abuse, and reproductive justice in America today.

Dr. Counter will present the work through a critical lens, showing how Adry’s form and subject matter exacerbate one another, disassembling and reassembling genre, and asking us: does a plotless narrative exist?

A discussion and Q&A will be moderated by Associate Professor Sam Witt, with Professor Adry and Dr. Counter addressing issues of genre, form, style, and narrative in both the theory and practice.

Check out our latest CELTSS Scholarly/Creative Spotlight: Dra. Inés Vañó García, Assistant Professor in the World Languages Department, at Framingham State University, recently published an article examining a pilot internship program that partnered undergraduate Spanish students with community organizations in New Hampshire. The program provided students with opportunities to use Spanish in authentic local settings, develop professional skills, and learn from community experiences. The article highlights how many Spanish programs in the United States continue to approach Spanish as a foreign language and emphasize study abroad while offering limited engagement with local Spanish-speaking communities. It also explores the opportunities and challenges institutions face in creating and sustaining community-engaged language programs.

Dr. Bryan Counter, Visiting Lecturer in the English Department, recently wrote two short essays revolving around horror, weird fiction, and wonder. "Empty and Full Rooms: the Punctum in Silent Hill f," published in Cleveland Review of Books, uses Roland Barthes's idea of the punctum to argue that the darkest moment in the 2025 survival horror game is actually a room in which no direct threat (for once) is posed to the player character. "'Of unearthly, of astounding beauty': A Fragment about Wonder," published in Oxford Literary Review, focuses on a moment in Arthur Machen's 1936 story "N," as well as Maurice Blanchot's work, to make a connection between fragmentary writing and the sense of wonder.

Joey Gould, Center for Academic Success and Achievement (CASA), at Framingham State University, recently had a third book of poetry, transfinity, published by Lambhouse Books. transfinity uses math as an extended metaphor for queerness, love, and life itself. As Rita Mookerjee writes, transfinity "demystifies the trans experience without sacrificing its complexity." Joey, who graduated from FSU in 2007, tutors writing at CASA, and their project started in conversation with math tutors there.

Dr. Lisa Thomas, Professor in the Nursing Department at Framingham State University, successfully secured a $155,000 Skills Capital Grant from the Massachusetts Executive Office of Education. The grant, written by Dr. Thomas with support from Pamela Melideo, Nursing Simulation Lab Coordinator, will fund updated equipment and expanded pediatric simulation resources. FSU’s nursing simulation program offers graduate nursing students with distinctive preparation in integrating simulation into their teaching—an innovative component not widely incorporated into MSN education programs. As the nurse faculty shortage continues, preparing MSN educated faculty is essential to strengthening the future nursing workforce. This investment enhances both educational excellence and workforce sustainability.

Dr. Ellen Rearick, Associate Professor in the Nursing Department at Framingham State University, has been named to the National League for Nursing Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (NLN CNEA) Evaluation Committee. The NLN CNEA provides accreditation services for nursing programs.

The Evaluation Committee reviews on-site evaluator applications, reviews training programs for all on-site evaluators and committee members involved in the accreditation process and oversees the evaluation process used to evaluate the performance of the on-site evaluation teams and accreditation review committee/sub-committee members.
