ASL Clear - American Sign Language STEM Concept Learning Resource, ASL Ed Center, 1257 Worcester Road, Suite 186, Framingham, MA (2026)

ASL Clear is a publicly-available, online educational resource developed and designed by heritage ASL-signers and Deaf professionals in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). The first version of ASL Clear was made possible by funding from The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education awarded to Boston University, and it is now operated by the ASL Education Center (www.asledcenter.org). ASL Clear offers a growing collection of complete STEM micro-modules in ASL. Each micro-module contains a brief instructional presentation associated with a set of STEM terms, definitions and examples, all in ASL. Unique ASL‐feature search functionality allows students to search for ASL terms by entering locations, handshapes, and movements. This feature ensures that students can access content using their knowledge of ASL. Each STEM term in ASL is labeled with approximate English synonyms, which makes possible the English-based search function. The ASL Clear design shifts from a vocabulary-centered focus to the level of concept-centered ASL content development. Our team believes this approach increases the potential to enhance academic discourse in the classroom and increase the sharing of contextualized STEM instructional materials and vocabulary in ASL.
