The English Department hosted its annual English Major Career Night in the McCarthy Center Forum, with a Zoom option for those who couldn’t attend in person.

The evening featured seven FSU English alumni who shared their post-graduation career journeys and insights. Pictured left to right: English Teacher Sam Stafinski (‘23), Boston Globe Reporter Spencer Buell (‘13), Copy Editor Lindsay Malveira (‘11), Immigration Lawyer Dan Flahive (‘18), Multimedia and Educator Support Specialist Kaitlin Carman (‘24), User Experience Manager Jillian Poland (‘19), and Acting for Digital Arts Professor Diego Rocha (‘18).

The event concluded with a Q&A session, giving current students the opportunity to identify internship opportunities and gain valuable advice on career-readiness. 🧑‍🎓🎤💛

Kudos to Dr. Desmond McCarthy for bringing together such an impressive group of recent alumni, all of whom credit Dr. McCarthy with being an important and highly effective mentor.

“We’re both huge fans of Ana Huang’s romance novels. She’s written four series, and we’ve read all of them. All the characters are in the same universe and are interconnected in some way. It’s just really interesting to learn about all the different characters that she somehow manages to connect to each other.”

Regie Gibson’s performance this week, cosponsored by FSU’s Arts & Ideas Series and the English Department, was a high-impact experience our campus community will never forget! His images, his rhythms, and his message about our shared humanity, which lives most vividly in language, is now part of our DNA as a community.

This was a bonding event for the audience that filled the Heineman Ecumenical Center. We spontaneously clapped to the rhythms, participated in call and response, involuntarily sighed at the recognition of deep insights and shared feeling, and at the end, students asked earnest questions, which Regie answered as only a true educator can. We all felt taught and inspired!

A recording of the event will be linked to the English department website, so stay tuned!

Special thanks are due to our creative writing faculty who had the vision to invite Massachusetts’s first Poet Laureate to campus: Jennifer DeLeon, Patricia Horvath, and Sam Witt.

Meet Rachel DiBella, class of ‘08, the Associate Director for Strategic Prevention Initiatives in the Office of Gender Equity at Harvard University. After earning a B.A. in English from FSU, she went on to earn a Master’s in Social Work from Boston College (‘14) and a Doctor of Psychology Degree from William James University (‘25).

Rachel recently joined current Arts & Humanities students for a networking dinner—offering thoughtful feedback on English majors’ résumés and sharing her professional insights.

English graduate student Emma Lyons delivered her paper, "Editorial Transmission: Histories & Futures in Love’s Labour’s Lost," at the Masters in English Regional Conference in Salem, MA! This was an excerpted version of the research paper she wrote for her Independent Study with Dr. Kristen Bennett last semester.

Reflecting on the experience, Lyons shared, "I really liked going! It was fun to meet other graduate scholars and see how their research differs and connects to FSU’s program. It was nice to step outside the FSU bubble and see what conversations are happening at other schools. Presenting helped me face some fears with public speaking, and now I feel much more confident in my ability to communicate and engage with scholarship. I always love working with Dr. Bennett—she’s one of the kindest and most encouraging professors at FSU. It was always the highlight of my week going into her office to talk about our work.”

Dr. Bennett added, “Emma did a wonderful job with both the paper and the Q&A—you could feel the pride and excitement bursting from our corner of the lecture room!”

Congratulations, Emma, on representing FSU’s 4+1 Program and sharing your research! 👏📚

The Gatepost traveled to New York City with their devoted advisors, Dr. Desmond McCarthy and Professor Liz Banks , to attend the CMA (College Media Association) conference in the Big Apple! This is an important, and much anticipated, annual Gatepost tradition!

This is what college is all about! Last Wednesday’s screening of “Nickel Boys,” in honor of Black History Month, was co-sponsored by the Arts & Ideas Series and the English Department as part of the annual Arthur Nolletti Jr. Film Series.

Arts & Ideas Director Dr. Yumi Park welcomed everyone, then pre-written remarks by FSU film scholar Dr. Sally Shafto introduced the film. Everyone who attended was deeply affected by the traumatic history the film reveals and moved by the expressive, image-driven style of the film.

Students, faculty, and staff took part in an in-depth post-film discussion, led by English major Wenchell Pierre. A lucky 8 students received free copies of Colson Whitehead’s original novel, “Nickel Boys,” and are invited to a book discussion comparing the novel and Ramell Ross’s film adaptation, hosted by FSU Librarian Weronika Zawora, during National Library Week in April. Additional participants are welcome!
