A safe walk starts with paying attention. This month’s Safety Spotlight reminds students and families to put phones away, stay aware of their surroundings, and stop and look both ways before crossing the street. Small habits can make a big difference in keeping our school community safe.

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Mr. Jim Cardenas, a beloved educator, leader, and friend to so many in the Fowler Unified School District and Malaga communities.

Before becoming a leader in Fowler Unified, Mr. Cardenas was an innovative and driven teacher at Malaga Elementary School. The shirt, tie, and pencil tucked behind his ear were all signatures of “Teacher Jim.” He held high expectations for his students, instilling self-respect by asking them to "sit tall" in their chairs and ensuring they understood the utmost importance of learning. Always ahead of the curve, he participated in the district's very first 1:1 technology pilots.

Mr. Cardenas went on to serve with distinction as an Academic Coach, Principal of Marshall Elementary School, and most recently as the District’s Coordinator of Student Success. Throughout every chapter of his career, he brought a strong work ethic, a deep commitment to student achievement, and a steadfast belief that all students can reach their goals with determination and encouragement.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Mr. Cardenas will be remembered most for his positive outlook and courageous spirit. He was a true inspiration to countless students, families, and colleagues, and his impact extended far beyond the walls of our schools.

Our lives are all the better for having known such a wonderful human being. You will be deeply missed, Mr. Cardenas. Thank you for the difference you made in our community.

As the school year gets into full swing, Fowler Unified is reminding our entire community to help keep our streets safe for students and families walking to and from school. Peak morning and afternoon times mean busier roads, so please plan ahead so you aren't rushed!

Essential Safety Tips:

⏰ Leave Early: Give yourself extra time to travel safely without needing to speed.

🚶‍♀️ Use Crosswalks: Students and parents should always cross at designated crosswalks.

🛑 Yield to Pedestrians: Always come to a complete stop for pedestrians in crosswalks and wait until they safely cross before moving.

🚗 Keep Crosswalks Clear: Avoid blocking crosswalks when stopping, which forces pedestrians into traffic around your vehicle.

📉 Observe Speed Limits: Adhere strictly to lower school zone speed limits and use extra caution during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up times.

Let’s work together to keep every student safe!

The Fowler Unified School District Board of Trustees extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and Fowler community mourning the passing of Leonard Hammer. Leonard devoted much of his life to serving Fowler as a former Fowler Unified School District Board Trustee, Fowler City Council member, United States Army veteran, and dedicated supporter of our schools and students. For more than 40 years, Leonard served as the public-address announcer for Fowler High School athletics. His familiar voice became a cherished part of Friday night football and countless athletic events, creating lasting memories for generations of students, families, and fans.

“Leonard’s legacy will live on through the countless students he encouraged, the athletic programs he supported, the community he served, and the generations of Fowler families whose lives he touched.”

Leonard gave a lifetime of service to Fowler. His voice, his presence, and his commitment to our students and community will be deeply missed. We honor his memory and extend our heartfelt sympathy to his family, friends, and loved ones.
