Better in Benton is here!

We have a lot to be proud of in Benton Community School Corporation, and now there's a new place to see it all in one spot! Our new Better in Benton website highlights the ways we're growing, achieving, and making the most of our referendum dollars every day.

This week, we spotlight two new sections of our website:

“Academic Growth & Achievements” briefly explains Indiana’s learning assessments and Benton’s academic goals.

Our ”Making Cents” page offers a primer on Indiana school funding and addresses Benton’s commitment to managing taxpayer dollars responsibly.

This is just the beginning — we'll be adding new videos, stories, and updates throughout the year, so be sure to check back often!

The State of Indiana has enacted SEA 78, a new law mandating that school corporations develop policies governing the use of wireless communication devices by students during the school day. This law requires that students power off their devices and store them in an inaccessible location throughout the school day. The intent behind this legislation is rooted in research highlighting the negative impact of cellphone use on today's youth.

We understand that this change represents a considerable shift from previous practices, where students were accustomed to using their devices, including communication with family members during the day. Our administrative team is actively collaborating with other schools to develop policies that adhere to this new law while considering the needs and opinions of our students and families. Importantly, we will be seeking input from our students, as their ideas and perspectives are invaluable in shaping a policy that is effective and considerate of their needs.

We are currently exploring alternative communication tools, such as Parent Square, which could allow students to communicate with families using their school-assigned tablets. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work through the details of implementing this law in a manner that best serves our students and families. We are committed to keeping you informed and involved throughout this process.

The Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) hosted the 2025–2026 Literacy Achievement Celebration today, recognizing schools across the state for meeting the goal of 95% of third graders reading proficiently.

BCSC proudly congratulates Otterbein Elementary on achieving 100% proficiency for the 2025–2026 school year. Amanda Whaley, Dean of Students at Prairie Crossing Elementary and former 3rd grade teacher at Otterbein, accepted the award on the school’s behalf. She is pictured with Indiana Secretary of Education Dr. Katie Jenner.

We also recognize the continued dedication and hard work of both of our elementary schools as we celebrate this milestone and work to both reach and maintain the IDOE’s goal of 95% of Indiana students reading proficiently.
