Story time: Persistence and authentic relationship building go a long way!

A while back I received a pitch as I was curating TEDxLincolnSquare.

I don’t think he’ll mind me saying that his first attempt truly fell flat.

He said, “Tricia, I want to talk about my wife. I just got married.”

I said to him (with love), “That's adorable and not an idea worth spreading. Come back to me.”

Rather than reworking his pitch he leveraged the door I opened for him with my response and he focused on building a relationship and offering his help!

He courted me… for a whole year… persistently, respectfully, with kindness and generosity.

Ever once in a while I’d get a message, “Tricia, how can I help you? Do you have anything I can share with my audience? I would love to support you in any way I can!”

And he’d follow through.

When I opened up applications for TEDx the following year, you bet he applied!

And... I couldn’t say yes right away. He still didn’t have his idea nailed BUT I loved what he was about and wanted him to win.

So I reciprocated and helped HIM!

I reached out to him with a challenge—I asked him to craft a talk idea about political polarization because as we built our relationship, I learned he hosted a regular Shabbat dinner with people who had diverse perspectives.

He took that idea and ran with it and...I put him on my stage.

Moral of this story: His sheer persistence and commitment of being in service and building an authentic relationship with me won me over and I told him exactly what he needed to do to land his big talk, and I’d love to do the same for you…
