Barnes Martial Arts Our students manifest the core lessons of the Martial Arts in their daily lives and take them "Out o To help those in need. Harmony. Wholeness.

"Our purpose as a Martial Arts Studio is to do Good in the world. To stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves. To give a voice to those who suffer in silence. To defend against violence with peace. And to leave the world a better place than we found it." -- Master Gary R. Barnes

At BMA we believe . In fact, it is the very HEART of our philosphy of Martial Arts. Yes, we teach our students how to handle themselves physically, but if all that we do is learn how to hurt people, we are not only learning half of the arts, we are learning how to be incomplete as people. You must not learn how to hurt, without also learning how to heal. You must not study violence without implementing peace. You must balance physical technique with emotional maturity. You must not train how to take someone down without also knowing how to help someone up. You must train the open hand (and open heart) as much -- or more -- as the closed fist. The real purpose of training ... is balance. We train to be the best PEOPLE we can be.

Junior Black Belts, I have a question: "What did you learn about YOURSELF today?"

Don't answer immediately. Think about it. Let it marinate.

What did you learn about YOURSELF today?

Please give a big congratulations to our three newest Junior Black Belts.

Lily Krulack, Nicholas Sudosky and Hendrix Markwalter. Over three and a half hours, all three of these 'kids' were dragged out into deep water, pushed to their limit, and made it back to shore.

A big thank you to Master Kurt Sussman, Josh Caracappa, and "Uncle" Dave Williams.

Thank you as well to all of these Junior Black Belts' parents and families -- for your years of support and trusting BMA with your kids' training. That means more than I can properly express. I am humbled to be their instructor.

To the new Junior Black Belts: I promise you, this is just the beginning of your journey.

Great job, everyone!

Juniors and Adults ... look at this.

This is what we do. We combine all ranges -- striiking, grappling, etc., -- into a functional form of self-defense. We want you to be safe no matter where you are.
