Snacktivity this morning to work on fine motor skills!
Our teeny friends can’t quite thread the Cheerios themselves, so I thread and they pull them off. The bigger kiddos put on and take off their own! Some friends like to pull off with their teeth like a candy necklace! Such a fun simple activity. And we all love a good snack!

We tried a new activity today with process art. It wasn’t about the end result, it was about how we got there. Using our fine motor skills to push the gem. Doing some pre-writing work for these fingers. It was hard for most of the kids at first, but by the end, they all were pushing the gems with ease! We ended the activity by pulling stickers out to add to the art. They did such a great job!

Hi! I’m Mara Hutchens. I run Sunshine Smiles Childcare out of my home. I’ve been doing my own home daycare since July 2017. Prior to that, I worked at a daycare, elementary before and after school care, gym child watch, preschool gym&swim class and babysat/summer nannied since my Safe Sitter certification at 11 years old. Taking care of kiddos is part of who I am!

I’ve had a few people ask me how I keep my daycare running, with only being open until 4:30, and closing on Tuesdays. What about the families who need Tuesdays or later pick up?

I’m not for everyone. I know that. But I am for certain people. I’m for the families who only need part time. I’m for the families who have a grandparent around who want to make sure they have that special weekly time with their grandkid, but can’t commit to 5 days a week. I’m for the families who work nights and need to sleep during the day. I’m for the families who work from home and need a close to home option- shoutout to all my Wyndstone neighbors! I’m for the families who just need a day or two to get the appointments taken care of and run errands.

As for why I choose these days/hours?
Well, I’m mom to FIVE little humans. I need my evenings free to run them to ALL of the sports. I need one day a week to run errands and go to appointments and clean up around the house. I also have found that I’m the best version of myself when I have the one day. And that’s best for everyone.

If you have some flexibility in your schedule, we might be for you. If you value outside time and messy play, we might be for you. If you want your child to be loved and cared for as if they were my own kids, we might be for you. If you want your child to be taught how to be a good person, how to be responsible, to be caring, to show empathy, to be a friend, we might be for you. If you want your child to dance, laugh, explore, get messy, read, sing, follow their interests, we might be for you.

I’m not for everyone, but send me a message if you think I might be for you! If you aren’t looking for childcare, I’d love if you could share this post to try and reach someone who could be a good fit.

We got magnifying glasses, little bug catchers, and tweezers to start exploring outside last week.
This week we added some fake bugs!
And yesterday evening, our caterpillars arrived!
They are much bigger than the ones we got last year, so I don’t think it will be too long before they start building their chrysalises!

**we catch our bugs to observe, but let them go once we’re done checking them out!

Oops we did it again!
I didn’t get everyone to sleep this time, apparently the 4 year olds are too cool for outside naps.
But we went out at 9:30am and will have pickups from the backyard! Yay for beautiful weather

We aren’t screen free. I don’t ever claim to be.
We love our Danny Go and DJ Raphi dance parties. We love Paw Patrol or Mickey Mouse most mornings as we’re getting dropped off and warmed up for the day. We love the 20 minutes of PBS Kids as we transition from lunch to nap, have diaper changes and get comfy in bed.

But we also love being outside. We aim for at least 1.5 hours a day in the backyard.
We love using our fine motor skills. We refuse to be part of the statistic of kids who can’t use their pincher grasp. We pick up tiny chickpeas or beans when they fall out of the bins. We scoop and play. We squeeze and shape and cut the playdoh. We balance the blocks. We sing songs and act out silly stories. We create worlds and imagine the most exciting adventures. We learn how to share, how to have empathy and acknowledge our friends’ fears and interests. We learn how to listen, how to be responsible. How to clear our places, clean up our toys, keep track of our own water cups.
We learn how to be good humans. To use our manners and celebrate our friends when they are proud. We learn how to comfort them when they need it.

I can’t give you a curriculum I use. I more than likely don’t have a weekly theme. I probably couldn’t even tell you my plan for the day at drop off. But what I do know, is that we will play and learn and grow each and every day. And at the end of the day, we’ll probably be dirty. And my promise to you, is that your child will be cherished. And poured into. And built up. And taken care of.
Because I don’t start each day with a goal of activities to accomplish. I start my day ready to tend to the needs of my precious little friends. Ready to create a craft on the spot because “I want to make a monster” or throw together a new sensory bin with trucks because that’s what we are interested in today.
I start my day ready to love these kids exactly where they’re at on this specific day. And I’m so grateful for every moment.
