It's been a while since I posted anything but it's time to keep you updated on all the cool stuff we've been doing.

We recently took 16 students to state Skills USA in fabulous Ontario CA. I had 4 welders and 3 cabinet makers that all were great but we didn't metal. Congratulations to ally (2nd in Culinary)and Liam (3rd in photo) we had a great time at universal studios, top golfing, and go-karting. Thank you to the Masons who sponsored us.

I took 8 students (all my seniors) to Trades day where over 50 local business and trade organizations provided hands on experience for students in the Humboldt Del Norte area. For the first time ever I had presenters calling me to tell me how awesome and engaging my kids were. Thank you to HCOE for organizing it and all the great prestenters who took the time to put on the show. It gets better every year.

Jack Gonzalez earned a reward at HCOE, by working hard in class and being a great student and good friend. He is a one of a kind kid who deserves recognition.

We are starting to finish up projects for the year and I'll be posting more as they are done. Check out Gavin's awesome sculpture.

Trades day was a hit. The kids had a blast and we ended the day with a tour of the CR trades programs. The icing on the cake was that Avajane won the grand prize of a tool belt loaded and awesome tools. Thanks to the builders exchange for organizing the event and all the businesses who participated. It is always awesome and only gets better every year.

The highlight for me was seeing all my former students who are now there presenting to my current students. It made me feel a bit aged with a great patina.

Rocket stove wood fired pizza oven for Gavin and black walnut serving trays for the Culinary class. Kids are awesome. Thanks to Sequoia gas for the old propane tanks that we used to make the oven. He's headed to Mojave desert to cook for the party.

Big day today. Make welding coupons that didn't show yesterday due to an ice storm at 6. Get ready for CR woodworking at 8. Skills USA welding sculpture at 830 online from shop. Wake up welders and figure out zoom for multiprocess Skills USA competition online in shop from 10-1. Go to CR for awards where Wescott won first in woodworking (great job kid). Went home and did a drywall job in McKinnleyville. Made it home by. Sleep in till 7 tomorrow.

Arc Exposure 2026

2 day training seminar in Chico for me and 4 hard working kids. We had a great time and learned a lot. We studied mig, tig and oxyfuel from industry experts. Thanks to all of the sponsors like O&M, Miller, and the great staff at Butte College who put it on. We also got to hang out with 2 of my program graduates who are top of their class in the welding program in Butte. It's great to see their success.

Problem: The top piece is from our wonderful 1920's mortiser. It is a cone clutch shifting fork that is worn out and parts haven't been made for 100 years.

Solution: Draw another one in CAD. Upsize it for casting shrinkage, and cut out two patterns on the CNC. Use the two patterns to make a match plate and cast it out of bronze. (Middle)

Once it is cast then machine it to spec, then you can test and install. Hope it works for another 100 years. (Bottom)

This was all done at Fortuna High's shop by Truman Elmore and I. Great job kid there's not many shops with this capacity these days. This is the kind of real world makers learning and problem solving that kids need. Most schools have replaced problem solving with study skills and social emotional learning.

Skills closing ceremony at the Hawks Arena. No medals for the boys this year but they were prepared, worked hard, and represented Fortuna well. They will be successful whenever life takes them. We are ready to get out of 100° heat and back to the coast. See you all in the fog
