When Tarrant County College graduate Mackenzie Sutton crossed the stage at TCC’s May 15 commencement, the moment carried weight far beyond a diploma. For a young woman who spent years in foster care searching for stability, a hug from her adoptive father, TCC Connect English professor David Sutton, made it complete.

One small step - TCC News 05/28/2026

Julia Brown refused to let a sports injury, subsequent medical complications, and the isolation of the pandemic be the end of her academic story. She came home from UT Ausin, focused on her health, and decided to take "one small step" forward with us at Tarrant County College.

She now works in the Office of Academic Affairs at TCC Southeast, graduated with an Associate of Arts, and is finishing a second associate's degree in chemistry to further pursue a career in biochemistry research.

Veterans tackle civilian life with lessons they learned in the military — with leadership, adaptability and resilience. Creating a pathway for military-connected students to continue their education and career growth is important as higher education helps prepare the future workforce of North Texas.

During Military Appreciation Month, Tarrant County College is proud to celebrate stories like Mark Power, an U.S. Army veteran who reminds us that transformative victories often continue long after military service ends.

Through education, support systems and opportunity, Mark said TCC helped translate his experience into meaningful future — one that has also helped others.
