TCOM’s Lucinda Ba is talking about it, but she also wants others to know they can talk about it too. Mental health. The first-year medical student, who is also a talented artist, created a four-part acrylic canvas painting called “To Be a Med Student” that was chosen to be on display at The Arnold P. Gold Foundation Humanism Summit recently. The series of paintings shines a brighter light on the hidden struggles with mental health in medicine. We are very proud of the terrific work by Lucinda!

TCOM’s Rinka Ko was one of just 30 medical students and residents from across the nation that was chosen for the prestigious 2026 American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) Foundation Family Medicine Leads Emerging Leader Institute Scholar. The program brings together future family medicine leaders for leadership development, networking, mentorship, and the opportunity to develop a project addressing an issue important to the communities they hope to serve. Ko, the president of TCOM’s Refugee Health Initiative, will spend this year developing a navigation toolkit for refugee communities. Terrific work, Rinka!

Hayden Flume has delivered some remarkable research in his time at TCOM, and he’s being honored for that as he has been selected as the recipient of the 2027 Award for Scholarly Excellence in Research. His outstanding publication record, coupled with his research accomplishments across orthopedic surgery, oncology, and ophthalmology, has been widely recognized for its impact. He has also received the 2nd Place Award for Best Original Research at the Texas Osteopathic Medical Association - TOMA Midwinter Conference and the 2nd Place Award for Best Quickshots and Presentation at the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons Annual Clinical Assembly, which further underscores the quality and influence of his work. When you hear Robert and Valerie DeLuca talk about why they love rural medicine, it’s not just the practice, the profession, or even the people; it’s all of it -- it’s the way of life. That way of life has led the TCOM alums to establish the Valerie K. DeLuca, DO and Robert C. DeLuca Rural Health Scholarship Endowment at TCOM. We honored a transformative legacy today with the unveiling of a plaque to honor Dr. Rynn Ziller’s contribution and dedicated service to TCOM and UNT Health Fort Worth. There was simply no better champion for students than Dr. Ziller, who led the way for student well-being and helping them be successful in everything they did. She's retired now, but never forgotten, and her legacy will live forever. Congratulations, Dr. Ziller!

When staff members across UNT Health come together, meaningful connections can extend beyond the walls of their individual departments. That was the vision behind the inaugural TCOM Staff Engagement Committee, launched this year to foster collaboration, communication, recognition and engagement among staff across TCOM, the Departments of Public Health and Physician Assistant Studies, and the Clinical Practice Group.

The inaugural committee included Annie Mathew, Beth Lucy-Speidel, Ashley Gomez, Dahlia Gomez, Jessica Arroyo, Tiffany Gardner, Ashley Leon, Maya McMillian, Kimberly Rossiter and Lizbeth Rodriguez. In its first few months, the committee established the foundation for continued staff engagement and connection across the newly aligned colleges and programs.

We are also pleased to announce our newest members of the Staff Engagement Committee for the 2026-2027 year! Please join us in congratulating Holly Hennig, Nora Cantu, Alyssa Overbey, Esme Anaab, Marvis Orzek, Maya McMillian and Celeste Castorena 🎉
