This is not a karate school - I teach "combatives" - Real world, proven, self defense strategies and tactics: There are no uniforms, board breaking, pointless forms/katas, belts, or trophies. Our motto is, "You don't need a black belt." Simply stated, it is neither necessary or useful to train for years to learn how to defend yourself. This is a system, not a style: A traditional martial art "style" trains a person to fit a self defense situation to their style - this is very impractical - A practitioner must memorize and practice literally dozens, even hundreds, of choreographed responses to every different scenario... Caveat: If you cannot avoid/escape an attack/assault/fight - and/or you are in a position or circumstance which necessitates that you protect another person from harm - what will you do? At this present time what actual skills do you have at your disposal 24/7 ? You have a right and a responsibility to defend yourself - whether against assault, domestic violence, bullies, or the Zombie Apocalypse, it's up to you. The guiding principle of combatives is to "attack the attacker." We flip the script so to speak. Instead of defending yourself (that is a disempowering mind set) we turn the tables and attack them, so to speak. The longer an assault/attack/fight last, the more likely the defender is to get hurt. or worse. The goal is to end an assault as quickly as possible. If you cannot escape and must use force (aka violence) then you must respond with as much aggression as possible - backed with some basic skills - make them sorry they attacked you - make them retreat/escape/run away - or inflict enough pain that they can no longer attack/hurt/injure/kill you. Your goal isn't to "win" it is to live. Personally, I am a peace loving person, as are most of the people I know. I sincerely respect Ghandi, MLK, and all of the others who triumphed over tyranny with non-violent protest. But folks, that simply doesn't work against a rapist, crackhead, gang banger, or other violent criminal types - seriously. Instruction is typically on Saturday or Sunday morning - two to three students, or a private 1:1 lesson. I am an average sized person, in average shape - if I can do this, you can, too. Bottom line: Self protection is about skills - come get you some!
