The Vaganova method is a ballet technique and training method created by the renowned pedagogue (teacher) Agrippina Vaganova (1879-1951). Combining elements from the traditional French technique, as well as the athleticism and virtuosity of the Italian school, this method was designed to work the body as a whole, with total involvement of the body in every movement with equal attention paid to the

upper body as well as the legs and feet. Vaganova believed that this approach increased consciousness of the body, thus creating a harmony of movement and greater expressive range. George Balanchine and Mikhail Baryshnikov were formally trained in the Vaganova Method.
