When you child struggles with reading, it can feel overwhelming. I know about this journey as an educator and as a parent of 2 boys with reading challenges. Advocating for them in ARD meetings was always stressful, sometimes to the point of tears, even with my background. I always imagine what that is like for someone who is not an educator or with specialized expertise in reading to walk that path. And the challenge isn't always a lack of services. Sometimes, the barrier is knowing how to access them and what you are actually entitled to.

That's why Literacy United created our Monthly Saturday Bookworms Parent University—to give parents the knowledge, confidence, literacy resources, and practical tools they need to advocate for their children and navigate their educational journey.

Because literacy is about more than reading.

It's understanding the information coming home from school.
It's knowing what questions to ask.
It's understanding your child's needs.
It's having the confidence to speak up.
And it's knowing where to turn when you need help.

We are so excited this year to partner with our friends Go Beyond Grades Tarrant County, Junior League Fort Worth, and Literacy Fort Worth to provide amazing parent training and at the same time our reading specialists @ Literacy United will be doing the fun part (my favorite part) - reading, writing, creating and dreaming with the children - all ages and abilities welcome!!! All of this wouldn't be possible without the space being donated by University Christian Church of Fort Worth (this is not a religious event but the church has graciously allowed us space)

Hi Friends - are you guys ready for a little Labor Day reset? We’ve made it nearly a month in school! If you have children with special needs of any kind, we’d love to see you at Sensory Saturday at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History.

This is a FREE event for our community of special needs families - a quieter, gentler way to visit the museum. If you haven’t checked, the museum is not cheap these days and here is my stat for the day - raising a child with a disability like autism costs twice that of a neurotypical child!!!! So we as a community really appreciate these events as life is beyond expensive for us.

I look at these sweet children we serve at Literacy United and each one has a story. A bumpy road to becoming confident readers. Many have faced obstacles in the form of learning challenges or different brain wiring that makes learning to read hard in the best of circumstances… Even in the very best school and home environment, having a learning or developmental or intellectual disability makes reading acquisition difficult. Smaller class sizes, expert instruction by highly trained educators, and often outside 1-1 reading support like what we provide are essential. Our children who have the means and access - like my own children - can and do overcome their reading challenges. It often entails paying for various therapies, having the flexibility to take your kid to therapy during the work day, paying for a special needs private school and the list goes on. Those things require PRIVILEGE!

I also think today about circumstances in which children in poverty, the children we serve, with the same reading challenges must try to learn - food and gas prices that are so high families can’t afford any extras - 25% of children in Fort Worth will go hungry tonight; FWISD classrooms without classroom libraries or books (because in many schools those are banned), hot classrooms without AC (who can learn in this inferno we call home), parents so overwhelmed working multiple jobs they cannot help with reading at home. Truly folks we are in a crisis - a literacy crisis, an access crisis, a lack of social safety net crisis.

We need your help to do our work - we are trying to alleviate some burden by providing free literacy support to children who cannot afford to pay for private reading therapy. Today my mom called at lunchtime for a quick check
in and to let me know a hero of mine had died. I remember being a little girl and my grandad talking about Dolly Parton and how she was a beautiful lady with an even prettier voice. I remember singing her songs while she sang on Hee Haw reruns - blaring out of the box tv cabinet in my grandparents living room and then watching her in Steel Magnolias and crying my eyes out in the 1990s when you could rent movies at Blockbuster. I was always in awe of her presence. And now…if you didn’t know I was born in 1977, you do 🤣. For those of you who are younger than Gen X - you can just skip the above or even look some of that up!!!

Most importantly, though, I remember learning as an adult about her work in literacy. Her Imagination Library put hundreds of millions of books into the hands of children in poverty situations. And often when we give out a book at events or Bookworms Saturday, I think about her. How a star who shone so bright never forgot her roots and made sure children had home libraries. I think about how I cannot even imagine what the world would be like if we had just a few more people who were committed to loving kids and families through literacy. Truly she was an inspiration - and today more than ever her loss feels heavy because we need more people like Dolly in our world - gentle, genuine, kind, and compassionate. We need more people who make sure books are in kids hands when teachers are told they can’t have classroom libraries because those distract from the “curriculum” (raise your jaws up, you read that right) and we need more people giving out books when books are being banned and censored. You see books are a tangible representation of freedom, a literal and metaphorical escape from circumstances and situations that are dire, the ultimate symbol of resistance aka knowledge is power. Dolly more than many others understood all of that.

As Dolly said, “We can't just hope for a brighter day, we have to work for a brighter day. Love too often gets buried in a world of hurt and fear. And we have to work to dig it out so we can share it with our family, our friends, and our neighbors.” Come work with us friends by giving, volunteering, making literacy a priority - it’s going to take all of us to change lives through literacy…one child at a time.
