Autism is a wide and broad spectrum difference. There is no such thing as high and low functioning. Period. The only thing that really makes sense is the autism wheel.

“High-functioning” people have areas where they are very “low-functioning. And “low-functioning” people have very “high-functioning” areas.
There is a category of autism that is emerging as a group or category of autism being called “profound autism.” This is a subset who often have accompanying intellectual disabilities, epilepsy, stomach issues, often non-verbal and sometimes with self-injurious behavior.
Let’s talk cure now. The above subset desperately wants a cure — in other words, something that will make their loved ones happier and more able to function alone without 24-hr care. It is also true that other people than just this subset wish for a cure because they have debilitating anxiety and extreme difficulties with executive function which makes it hard for them to function to the level they wish to function.
There is no one autism. There is no one cure. There is no one cause. Any anyone who says there is — is quite uninformed.
What we are charged to do is live the life we’ve been given to the fullest. The first step to doing that is acceptance of our life as it is. Then go about earnestly seeking knowledge, skills and widespread support to make our lives as happy and full as possible.
