Please welcome Casey DiBenedetto to the Bear Den as our Early Childhood Pre-K teacher! She has spent the past 25 years working in Northwest ISD. This next year will be her 2nd year working in the Early Childhood program, the previous 6 years she spent in Kindergarten. Her goal is to help all children develop a love for school and learning. Mrs. DiBenedetto has been married for almost 25 years to her husband, Tony. They enjoy cooking out and spending time with friends and family. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, walking, and relaxing at home. She is currently pursuing her Master’s Degree from Lamar University and will graduate this coming fall. She can't wait to build collaborative relationships with families to help them support their child’s learning and development.

UPDATE: (5:16 pm 2/15) Northwest ISD will have a snow day on Tuesday, February 16 and Wednesday, February 17. Decisions regarding the rest of the week will be communicated as more information becomes available.

❄️ Northwest ISD will have a snow day on Tuesday, February 16. This means no classes for In-Person or Remote Learners. ❄️

With temperatures in the single digits and the wind chill warnings in effect, we also hope everyone is taking the necessary precautions to stay safe if/when getting outside!

To complicate things, many of our families are experiencing prolonged power outages in addition to the scheduled rolling blackouts. As we plan for the potential of remote learning in coming days, we are also considering the impact this could have on our students.

🌨️ FAQs about Bad Weather and Remote-Only Days 🌨️

• Will NISD need to make up the snow day for Tuesday later in the year?
No. Because we have planned for a day like this in our instructional calendar, the district has enough instructional minutes to have one snow day without needing a make up day later in the year.

• What about Wednesday and the rest of the week?
No decisions have been made yet for Wednesday or the rest of the week, but we are making plans to offer asynchronous learning (learning that does not require the student and teacher to be engaged at the same time) if the weather forecasts prove accurate and it's not safe to have families on the roads and re-open our buildings.

• What will asynchronous learning look like, if that's what the district decides for Wednesday or longer?
During asynchronous learning, students have until 11:59 p.m. each day to engage in learning. Students would login similar to how they did the first month of school, accessing Moodle and Seesaw through the NISD portal. If prolonged power outages persist that prevent students from submitting their work, we ask our families to reach out to teachers if possible, and the district will follow guidance from the Texas Education Agency about attendance requirements.

• How will a decision about Wednesday be communicated?
A decision about Wednesday will be shared on social media, sent via email like this, and texted to families who have opted in to receive text messages from the district. To opt in to text messages from NISD, text Y to 67587.

Today we want to give our PreK team a shout out! PreK has already had a busy year! They are all learning remotely and having so much fun together. Over the past couple of weeks, they have learned what it means to be a good friend along with learning how special their names are. So far, they have learned the letters A, B, and C and are counting up to 5 objects! Last week, all students participated in a live science experiment where they pondered whether items will sink or float. These little scientists had so much fun! We can’t wait to see what else our PreK friends get to explore as the year goes on, and we are so thankful for Mrs. Allen and Mrs. Romo, their amazing and dedicated teachers!
