Good morning everyone!

Our very own 4th year students have offered to put on a residency match and application panel for TCOM students interested in orthopedic surgery. This will be a great opportunity to learn and ask questions about the residency application process from students who are currently going through it. The meeting will be held this Thursday (10/15) at 7pm. This event will be recorded and posted later for those unable to make it.

Topic: SAOAO - TCOM 4th year residency match and application panel

Bilateral Valgus Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis in an 11-year-old Girl 09/15/2020

Hello everyone!
Next Tuesday (September 22nd) at 6pm, we will be having our very first Surgery-based Journal Club meeting (partnered with AWS and SOSA).
Journal Club is a way you can expand upon your scope of what is happening in the world of research and interesting new ideas while learning about experimental plans and research directions. Journal clubs have many functions, including the provision of a forum for developing skills in critical thinking and appraisal, an essential part of being a competent clinician.
The article for this month's journal club is a SCFE case study (related to MSS1 material).

When reading a journal article, you may want to think about things like the aim of the article, the type of study and how it could be built upon, how relevant the study is, how generalizable the results may be, how it might impact future studies, how you would discuss these types of findings with your future patients, limitations to this study, etc.
Feel free to reach out if you have any questions!

Kalan Barnes is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.

Greetings Everyone!

It has been decided that this year the JPS Research Symposium has been moved to a virtual format. If there are any TCOM students who have an ortho poster they wish to be displayed, Dr. Wagner has made himself available to make this happen. Any student can email their poster to Dr. Wagner and he will have it forwarded to the JPS ortho residents and faculty members.

Alternatively, if you have an actual poster that you would like to be displayed, you can drop it off in the JPS ortho office (JPS main building, 3rd floor) before June 12th. The poster will be displayed for a few days and needs to be picked up by June 19th, or they will dispose of it for you.

Dr. Morgan Boren, an orthopedic surgery resident at Olympia Fields (Chicago), was here in February and discussed the importance for ortho students to be able to read and present an x-ray. Since we don't cover that at TCOM or get much experience with it, Shawn Rahman and I are going to start holding practice sessions via Zoom and everyone is welcome! We are rookies at this, but our goal is to practice, practice, practice so we can use x-ray reading as a way to stand out on rotations. I am not sure how often to meet, but we will decide after the first session. Hit us up if you have any questions!

First meeting: Friday, April 3 at 12pm (will post Zoom link in comments prior). ALL students are welcome to join!

TCOM took the AOAO Conference in Atlanta by storm this weekend! We had the largest representation of any osteopathic school at the conference. Apollo and Cameron had the opportunity to present their research and two of our very own got elected to serve as the Recruitment Chairs for the national board of SAOAO for the coming year! With that being said if you haven't done so already head on over to AOAO.org and sign up to be a national member of the SAOAO (different than your TCOM membership). They offer a ton of helpful resources if you're interested in orthopedics including a list of osteopathic orthopedic surgeons in the area and across the nation that you can reach out to.
