Happy 1 Year Guitar-iversary to 🎸

I can’t say enough great things about this guy. This past year he’s completed most of Phases 1-5 and played some really challenging songs.

He sent me a video this week where he figured out a new song by using his ear and fretboard knowledge to create his own best version that is better than the tabs and videos he found online- it made me really think about just how much he’s accomplished as a guitar player and as a MUSICIAN.

He always shows up with a great attitude (usually at 5:30am!), and he’s always committed to seeing each goal through to completion, no matter how hard.

The year was 2007.

I had just graduated with a degree in classical guitar performance.
But I was a rocker at heart. 🤘

No punk rock guitar degrees.
No Third Eye Blind masterclasses.
Just Bach, Tarrega, and way too many hours of etudes (which I eventually came to love)

After college, I signed up for lessons with a local classical guitar teacher.
I thought I’d blow him away. I was a serious student, after all. 🙄

First lesson:
Teacher: “Let me hear you play.”
Me:
Teacher: “Yeah… we need to start over.”

Ouch. 😅

My pinky was flaring out, my picking hand was all over the place, and I had some serious blind spots.

But that year changed everything for my playing.

And I see the same thing with my students now.
Just this week, a new guitar student told me he had my “Alternate Picking Level 1” mastered.
I had him show me.
We then spent 30 minutes fixing six things with his picking — and he walked out playing better than he has in years.
