Big shoutout to our September Member of the Month: Brad Trapnell! 👏

You can find Brad at the 11:30 class most of the time, and he’s been committed and super consistent ever since he joined! 💪

Here’s a little more about him you should know ⬇️

1️⃣ How long have you been doing CrossFit and why did you start?

I started in 2015, so I’ve been at it for almost 12 years now.  I tried it after a knee injury in soccer forced me to take some time off from primarily running.

2️⃣ What advice would you give to someone who is considering trying CrossFit?

Stick with it! It’s very humbling; it took me at least a few weeks of finishing workouts and thinking I might die before I started seeing slow, steady improvement.  I have been a gym rat since high school, but we do stuff in Crossfit I’d never tried before, so it helps to come with beginner’s mind. Somewhere along the way, I grew to love it; I’m very grateful to be able to continue this journey every day, and I’m always learning something new.

3️⃣ What is something about you most people don’t know?

Most people probably don’t know how weird I am about my routines. My favorite time of the day is the quiet early morning, when I’m sitting on the back porch with the dogs; I’m sitting on a mat reading, journaling and musing about the day ahead. I love the silence.

4️⃣ What is something you’re proud of that you had to work hard for?

I’m proud of my business. I started What’s On Tap twelve years ago, and somehow we’ve made it though the pandemic and just about everything else, and we’re still serving. I’m proud of a very supportive wife and family. I’m also very proud of my Crossfit progress; most people would roll their eyes when I go on about getting a PR, but we Crossfitters get it.

5️⃣ Is there anything else you’d like for us to mention?

I am grateful to be a part of this community at Iron Horse—the people make it awesome. I can’t think of one time when I haven’t left a Crossfit class in a better frame of mind—it’s therapy.

Did you know CFIH offers Traditional Strength Training? 💪

Until now, these small group sessions have only been offered in the mornings, but we’re getting ready to add NEW evening options, with only SIX spots available! 🙌

CrossFit is an incredible way to build strength, conditioning, and overall fitness, and we also know that your goals and training preferences can change over time.

Our Traditional Strength Training program offers another way to train at CFIH and may be a great fit if you:

💪 Prefer a more traditional approach to strength training, or simply want to change things up

🎯 Want more customized programming, accountability, and coaching support

🙌 Prefer a small group setting with less emphasis on higher intensity workouts, Olympic weightlifting, and higher skill gymnastics

🔄 Want to continue building strength, improving function, and training for longevity, just through a different approach

Same CFIH coaching and community, just a different way to train. 😎

Interested in being one of the SIX to join us? Shoot us a DM to get on the list before we release the new time slots! 👀

W Want to improve your pull-ups, chest-to-bar pull-ups, or bar muscle-ups? 💪

While there are several ways to learn these skills, developing awareness of your body position, shape changes, and the timing of those changes can go a long way when it comes to gymnastics.

And focusing on the level of your feet can assist with this. 🙌

Notice where the athlete’s toes rise in relation to the background during each movement:

👉 Pull-up: The toes stay somewhat low as she works to get her chin over the bar.

👉 Chest-to-bar: The toes rise higher to help create the additional elevation needed to make contact with the bar.

👉 Bar muscle-up: The toes rise even higher, helping drive the hips upward and creating the elevation needed to finish on top of the bar.*

*Fun fact: This is why keeping your feet below the bar is part of the standard for the bar muscle-up in CrossFit. Allowing the feet to travel over the bar can turn the movement into more of a glide kip, making it easier to create that elevation.

🔑 The takeaway: The higher you need your body to rise, the higher your feet can travel to assist.

For the higher skill movements, be patient and keep your feet out in front of the bar longer. Using the height of your toes as a reference can help you improve the timing of your shape changes and create more elevation, rather than simply trying to pull harder.

Save this post and give it a try! 🙌

Want some individual help with your gymnastics? Send us a DM to set up a skill session with one of our coaches. 👊

Consistency pays off! 💪

Over her last 90 days, Carol has:

⬆️ Gained 5 lbs of muscle mass
⬇️ Dropped a whopping 6% body fat!

Those results come from consistently showing up, putting in the work, and staying committed to the goals she set. Way to go, Carol! 🙌

This is also why we encourage every CFIH member to complete a Goal Review every 90 days. It gives us a chance to measure your progress, revisit your goals, celebrate what’s working, and make adjustments to your plan when needed.

Small actions, repeated consistently, lead to big changes over time. 👊

CFIH members, when was your last Goal Review? If it’s been more than 90 days, reach out to a coach and get yours on the calendar! 🎯
