This Memorial Day, we're honoring the men and women who served; including the ones who served underwater. ๐บ๐ธ๐คฟ
Modern scuba owes more to the military than most divers realize.
During World War II, the U.S. Navy's Underwater Demolition Teams, known as frogmen, were some of the most elite and dangerous operators in the war. Swimming into enemy-held waters with little more than fins, masks, and explosives, they cleared beaches of obstacles before major amphibious landings, including the shores of Normandy and the Pacific islands. Many didn't come home.
Their work laid the foundation for what would become the Navy SEALs, and the techniques, training, and equipment they developed fed directly into the civilian diving world that followed. The gear we use today, the training standards we follow, the culture of the buddy system and dive planning โ all of it has roots in what those teams built under fire.
Today we remember the ones who served, and the ones who never surfaced.

Ever wonder why shipwrecks are some of the most life-filled dive sites on the planet?
Within days of sinking, a biofilm of microorganisms coats the structure, acting as a biological welcome mat that signals larvae to settle and colonize.
Wrecks offer something the flat sandy seafloor can't: structure. Walls, overhangs, and crevices become shelter, nurseries, and hunting grounds. Research shows artificial reefs can actually host more fish than natural ones, including large predators like sharks and barracudas.

May the Fourth be with youโฆ and your buoyancy.
Blackwater diving might be the closest thing we have to exploring another galaxy. It's a night dive in the open ocean: no reef, no bottom, just you, a light, and the darkness stretching thousands of feet below.
Here's the science: every night, trillions of deep-sea creatures migrate toward the surface to feed โ a phenomenon called ๐ฟ๐๐๐ก ๐๐๐ง๐ฉ๐๐๐๐ก ๐๐๐๐ง๐๐ฉ๐๐ค๐ฃ, the largest migration on Earth. It involves up to 90% of all oceanic life, with a total biomass greater than every land animal combined. 76% of animals in that deep-water zone produce their own light through bioluminescence.
You don't need a spaceship to meet something truly out of this world. ๐

Your wetsuit is one of the most used and least cared-for pieces of dive gear.
After every dive: rinse thoroughly with fresh water, inside and out. Saltwater, chlorine, and sunscreen degrade neoprene over time. Don't wring it! Simply roll it gently or hang it flat to drip dry.
Drying: hang on a wide, padded hanger (a thin wire hanger creates pressure points that crack neoprene). Dry inside-out first, then flip. Keep it out of direct sunlight as UV exposure breaks down neoprene chemistry faster than almost anything else.
Storage: hang vertically in a cool, dry place. Never fold and store long-term. If you're putting it away for a season, a wetsuit conditioner helps maintain flexibility.
Zippers: rinse them clean and lubricate with a zipper wax or beeswax product. A seized zipper can destroy an otherwise-fine suit.
Signs it's time to replace: a wetsuit that no longer fits snugly, has tears that don't hold repair, or feels stiff and compressed is no longer keeping you warm the way it should.
Come see us at the shop for your next wetsuit! We're happy to help! ๐คฟ

Earth Day is Wednesday, April 22, and this yearโs theme, ๐๐ช๐ง ๐๐ค๐ฌ๐๐ง, ๐๐ช๐ง ๐๐ก๐๐ฃ๐๐ฉ, couldnโt be more fitting for a community that spends so much time underwater.
Hereโs what every diver already knows in their bonesโand what the data makes impossible to ignore: the ocean generates around half of the oxygen we breathe. It absorbs about 31% of human carbon dioxide emissions. It captures over 90% of the excess heat from those emissions.
The ocean isnโt a backdrop to life on Earth. Itโs a critical part of the system that keeps it going.
And itโs under pressure. Warming waters are bleaching coral reefsโecosystems that support about 25% of marine lifeโfaster than they can recover. An estimated 8 million metric tons of plastic enter the ocean every year. And ocean acidification is steadily changing the chemistry of the water, making it harder for marine life to build and maintain shells and skeletons.
Divers donโt just hear about thisโwe see it. Weโre in a unique position to notice the changes, from reef health to visibility to the species around us.
Our power is that weโve been there. Our planet is asking us to show up for it.
Happy Earth Day from all of us at Lone Star Scuba. ๐๐คฟ
